Getter setter vs public final

whats the difference between getter setters and public final fields

couldn't you just do this 

  public final String characterName;

  public PezDispenser(String characterName) {
    this.characterName = characterName;
  }

instead of the get set thing?

What your code snippet demonstrates is the default constructor of the class for when you initialize an instance of the PezDispenser class.

Best practices are to have unique getter and setter methods when accessing and changing attributes/methods from the class.
