Creating Screening Questions2:09 with Hope Armstrong
Learn how to create "screening questions" that let you identify the right people to interview, and avoid wasting time interviewing people who aren't your intended audience.
To find out if people qualify to participate in your research, you'll first 0:00 transform the criteria you already identified into measurable benchmarks. 0:05 Here's a general example that pertains to my dancing app research. 0:09 A criterion such as Uses Facebook becomes measurable when you turn it 0:14 into this benchmark, such as post on Facebook at least once a week. 0:19 And to go from this benchmark to freezing a screening question is easy. 0:24 To avoid leading people or revealing the answer you're looking for, 0:29 you should hide what you're looking for. 0:33 Rather than ask, do you post on Facebook at least once a week? 0:36 Or even how often do you post on Facebook? 0:40 Ask, how often do you post something on the following websites? 0:43 And list a few options including Facebook. 0:48 If a person chooses the right answer, they are in, if not, they are out. 0:51 The second criterion is Resides in the US. 0:57 The screening question would be, what is your country of residence? 1:01 Again, I'm not going to ask do you live in the United States? 1:05 The third one is, has a smartphone. 1:10 So my question would be, 1:13 which of the following do you use as your personal mobile phone? 1:15 With the list of possible phone options, you get the idea. 1:19 Pause the video and take a few minutes to write your screening questions using 1:23 the clothing store topic mentioned earlier. 1:27 Now that you have a good understanding of who you want and don't want to learn from, 1:32 compile a screening questionnaire or survey, you can send to people. 1:36 In addition to screening people in and out of your research activity, 1:40 you'll also want to ask for their contact information. 1:44 You may also ask about their availability for the interview. 1:48 Google Forms is a great tool you can use for free, for quickly creating a screener. 1:52 Check out the teacher's notes to see the screening questionnaire I made for 1:57 my dancing app. 2:01 Go ahead and create your screening questionnaire for 2:02 improving the clothing shopping experience. 2:05 I'll see you in the next video. 2:07
