In this final video of the course we look at how to update the text that appears in the footer of the admin area.
-
0:00
In this last video here on customizing the
-
0:02
WordPress admin area, we're going to take a
-
0:05
look at how to customize the text that appears down at the footer of the site.
-
0:10
It says, Thank you for creating with
-
0:11
Word Press, and displays the current version number.
-
0:15
Now the current version number is a helpful
-
0:17
thing be able to have, to see and display.
-
0:20
And since WordPress does not advertise it's nice that you
-
0:24
kick back and show people what software is powering there site.
-
0:28
However, in some places this can
-
0:30
be confusing because people don't even understand
-
0:33
how websites work, or what WordPress is, and how it's different than their site.
-
0:39
And some people just don't need to have
-
0:41
WordPress at all, because you want to avoid
-
0:45
distinguishing exactly what software is being use, because
-
0:48
you wanna hide that for one reason or another.
-
0:51
So, what we're going to do, in order to customize this,
-
0:55
is we're going to use the Custom Admin Footer Text plug-in.
-
0:59
So, let's come in under plugins, and look for the Custom Admin Footer Text plug-in.
-
1:07
We'll go ahead and install it.
-
1:09
[BLANK_AUDIO]
-
1:11
Activate it.
-
1:12
[BLANK_AUDIO]
-
1:15
And then under Settings, we should see the option for Custom Admin Footer Text.
-
1:21
And we have two main settings here.
-
1:24
One is the content that goes on the left.
-
1:27
So this would be Thank you for creating WordPress.
-
1:29
[BLANK_AUDIO]
-
1:34
So you could do your own branding, we could do something for treehouse.
-
1:39
For example.
-
1:40
[BLANK_AUDIO]
-
1:48
The name of the course, and then since these allow links,
-
1:53
we could also do something like link back the Treehouse.
-
1:58
So this is a good place that you could either
-
2:01
put in some general meta information that may be needed.
-
2:04
Maybe you need a link in the bottom, hopefully not.
-
2:08
Or maybe you just want to put your own personal
-
2:10
branding and information, and this plug-in lets you easily do that.
-
2:15
Pretty simple plug-in.
-
2:17
You can do this via code from the, functions.php
-
2:21
file, but we're not going to look at it.
-
2:23
But the hook that you'd be hooking into are what the
-
2:27
Admin Footer Text are, and what's showing up as the version.
-
2:31
So we have these two options, again, you could put HTML into
-
2:35
this and there are some other plug-ins that do some more stuff.
-
2:39
But this should give you a pretty customized dashboard and WordPress admin
-
2:45
area, all the way down to the last little bit of text appearing at the footer.
-
2:51
Congratulations on working your way through to How to
-
2:54
Customize the WordPress Admin Area Course, here on Treehouse.
-
2:59
At this point, you should not only know about different ways
-
3:03
to customize the admin area, and what is possible to customize,
-
3:08
but you should have two different approaches of how to tackle
-
3:11
each one of these, either via a code, or from plug-ins.
-
3:16
I encourage you, if this code is new to you, to
-
3:18
check out some of our more advanced courses, like how to build
-
3:22
themes, or how to build a WordPress plug-in, where we get
-
3:26
a lot more into actions, hooks, filters, and all of that stuff.
-
3:30
However, if all you need to know is how to customize WordPres, and you don't need to
-
3:35
do all the extra coding to get there, then
-
3:38
these plug-ins that we cover are a great solution.
-
3:42
Remember though, that there are a lot of
-
3:43
options for plug-ins for customizing the WordPress admin area.
-
3:47
And we broke this down and covered them in little bits and pieces.
-
3:52
I'd suggest that if customizing the admin area is something
-
3:55
you need to be doing that you look in the, all
-
3:57
of the different plug-ins that are out there, and some of
-
4:00
the plugins that may do multiple things built into one plug-in.
-
4:05
Good luck customizing the WordPress admin area, and keep on learning.
