Contrast & Balance2:29 with Mat Helme
What are other ways can contrast be explained in design? In this video we will look at how contrast and balance are key to great design.
In this video we'll take a look at contrast and balance and 0:00 why it's so important to us to understand in the world of design. 0:04 In design we comparing two or more objects 0:11 by their appearance, we refer to this as contrast. 0:13 There are many different ways to compare the elements or objects. 0:18 We can do this through shape, quantity, direction, position, and space. 0:23 The higher the contrast, the most importance you 0:31 can apply to a specific element or elements. 0:34 When designing websites we use contrast to make things stand out. 0:38 An example of this might be a Call to Action button. 0:43 We can use space around the object, such as white space, 0:46 and color, to contrast that specific element to make it stand out. 0:52 Perfect. 0:57 So we understand what contrast is, and how 0:58 to apply contrast to objects in a composition. 1:00 Let's take a look at applying techniques to achieve balance. 1:04 In design, balance is known as the 1:09 equal distribution of weight within a composition. 1:11 Because we live in a world of gravity, we automatically wanna 1:16 make things weigh the same, to put our minds at ease. 1:19 So we can use things like shape, size, color, and texture to see how heavy 1:24 or light the overall composition feels to achieve overall balance. 1:30 Again, we automatically wanna make things weigh the same. 1:35 It makes us feel comfortable. 1:39 We can also use symmetry to achieve balance. 1:42 This is when a layout appears mirrored. 1:45 This is known as symmetrical balance. 1:48 A type of symmetrical balance known as radial 1:51 balance, is also very effective when achieving overall balance. 1:53 This is when there are organized repeating patterns within a composition. 1:59 Now, I will tell you this. 2:04 Becoming a master at achieving perfect balance, within a composition, 2:07 takes a lot of work, and a lot of dedication. 2:11 Whenever you hear a designer saying, I need 2:14 to play around with this design a little 2:17 bit more, means he or she is trying 2:18 to figure out the perfect balance within that composition. 2:21 Now that we understand contrast and balance, let's take a quick quiz. 2:25
