[MUSIC] 0:00 Hi, I'm Devin, creative director for IBM's Project Whitespace. 0:09 In this course we're gonna learn about design thinking 0:14 by redesigning a checkout experience. 0:17 First, let's define design thinking. 0:20 Design thinking has been around for decades and it has been used create and 0:23 improve everyday products like toothbrushes or 0:27 computers, as well as non-tangible things like services and software. 0:30 But what is design thinking? 0:36 Design thinking is all about gaining insights into your user's experience 0:39 as you design, develop, or sell your services to your user. 0:44 [SOUND] While many get caught up on the design part of design thinking, 0:49 the emphasis should really be placed on the thinking, meaning anyone, 0:54 no matter their discipline, can benefit from design thinking. 1:00 The practice itself became solidified, largely thanks to the design 1:04 consultancy IDEO, acting as pioneers of the process in the early nineties. 1:09 And less than a decade later, Ideo's Bill Moggridge began emphasizing design 1:15 thinking in business practices rather than just product design. 1:19 Throughout this course, we'll be working through an example project where our 1:24 users web checkout experience is less than enjoyable. 1:29 Our opportunity to improve that experience will be found 1:34 by focusing on the areas of discomfort or annoyance in the users path, 1:37 or as it's known in design thinking circles, pain points. 1:42 We'll also be taking you through a design thinking workshop so 1:48 you can see these practices in action. 1:51 One of the maxims that design thinkers tend to say is show, don't tell. 1:54 And we're looking to do exactly that for you. 1:59 I'm looking forward to being your guide throughout the process, and 2:03 I'll see you in the next video. 2:05
