Sign Up for a GitHub account, and get started with a project.
First thing we'll do is head to GitHub.com. 0:00 If you already have an account, you can sign in. 0:02 If you don't, though, it's easy and free to create a new account. 0:05 I'll set one up for this course. 0:09 I'll pick a username. 0:11 Many people pick their username to match their other social media profiles on 0:13 Twitter, Instagram, for example. 0:17 And I'll also provide my email address and enter a password. 0:19 And click the big green button to sign in. 0:28 GitHub is free to use for public projects, and 0:32 you can host projects privately with a paid monthly subscription. 0:34 We'll sign up for the free plan for this course. 0:38 Great, now that we've signed up let's check out our profile. 0:44 It's empty now but not for long. 0:51 First we'll edit our profile and add some information about ourselves. 0:53 Later we'll follow some fellow GitHub users, star interesting repositories, and 0:57 add our own repository. 1:01 Soon enough we'll have a couple green contribution squares on our contribution 1:03 graph that show our activity. 1:06 The more active you are the darker your squares become. 1:08 Click Edit Profile and we'll fill in our profile information. 1:11 You can also get here by clicking on Settings. 1:16 You can upload a profile picture, add your name, email address, URL for your blog or 1:21 website, company name, location,and also you can click this box available for hire. 1:28 And this will be reflected on your profile page. 1:34 I'm gonna fill in my profile and I'll be right back. 1:36 [NOISE] Great, now I've got my profile set up. 1:38 On the left side you can see there are a bunch of tabs for personal settings. 1:42 Two important ones are the notification center and the security tab. 1:46 In the notification center, 1:50 you can choose to receive notifications via email or the web. 1:52 And you can also set up custom routing. 1:55 For example, you can have notifications about your personal projects sent to 1:57 one email address and for your work projects sent to another email. 2:01 Also, in the Security tab, you can set up two factor authentication for 2:04 an extra layer of security. 2:09 Before we can create any content on GitHub, 2:10 however, we'll need to verify our email address. 2:13
