Using Your Blog to Make Money2:28 with C.C. Chapman
There are a number of different ways to make money from your blog, but be prepared to weigh the advantages against the disadvantages.
So let's talk about some ways that you can directly monetize your blog. 0:00 I would assume that most of your business, most of your income is not going 0:04 to come directly from the content you put on your blog 0:07 but there are some options here. 0:10 I want to give a disclaimer that what works for you, works for me, 0:12 what works for some of your friends to be completely different. 0:15 There is no magic formula on how to monetize your blog 0:18 but I want to give you just a couple of different options 0:22 so you know that they're out there so you can investigate what works for you. 0:24 First is advertising. 0:28 It's the most obvious and easiest one to do. 0:30 This could be something as simple as a Google ads placement, blog ads, 0:33 or an advertiser actually are coming to you and say-- 0:38 Hey, can I buy banner space on your website? 0:40 You're not going to make a lot of money in doing this 0:42 until you've got a large audience. 0:45 These are usually done based on the number of viewers you have 0:47 but it is an option that something to get going n the beginning. 0:50 You may only get a few dollars or a few hundred dollars 0:52 but it's a direct easy way to get some money for what you're creating. 0:55 Another option is sponsored post. 1:00 This is when an advertiser will come directly to you and say-- 1:02 Hey, I'd like you to write a blog post about this. 1:06 Here's a certain amount of money. Here's the certain links we want. 1:09 I'll give you specification for it. So also known as an advertorial. 1:12 This, some people don't want to do. 1:15 Some people say, I don't want this and that's okay. 1:17 My advice is if you're comfortable with it and you think it's something 1:20 that you're audience is going to enjoy and be okay with, then go for it. 1:23 If it's off topic, if it's something your audience wouldn't expect, 1:27 then it's probably not a good idea. 1:30 Finally though, no matter how you do this, you have to make sure 1:34 to disclose if you're being paid for something. 1:38 The FTC recently passed laws where they can sue you. 1:40 You will be fined thousands of dollars if they decide to come after you. 1:44 When in doubt, just be over honest. 1:49 Say, listen, I'm being paid for this or I was given this product to review 1:52 or the software company gave me the software for free to try. 1:56 My philosophy is to over disclose. You cannot disclose too much. It's okay. 2:00 But if you suddenly decide--hey, you know what, I'm not going to disclose this. 2:04 It can come back to bite you. 2:07 Put it on the top of your post, your bottom your post. 2:09 There's great sites out there like CMPLY 2:11 which allow you to easily with the short link. 2:13 put it in Twitter, Facebook, or a blog post. 2:16 Never ever ever skip the disclosure. It's very very important. 2:19 The last thing you want is to get paid for something 2:22 then have the lawyers come after you because nobody likes that. 2:24
