[Deep Dive: Applying Effects: Photoshop Effects with Mat Helme]
-
0:06
If you're wanting to apply an effect from Photoshop
-
0:09
and don't want to switch back and forth between applications, no worries.
-
0:14
We can apply these effects right here in Illustrator.
-
0:18
With our file open, you will see we have an image of the map.
-
0:21
With the image selected, let's head up the effects drop-down
-
0:25
and take a look at some Photoshop effects we can apply to this image.
-
0:32
All of the Photoshop effects are located down at the bottom:
-
0:36
artistic, blur, brushstrokes, distort, pixelate, sketch, stylize, texture, and video.
-
0:43
These are all the same effects used in Photoshop.
-
0:47
And then right at the top here we have effect gallery.
-
0:50
So with our image selected, let's select effect gallery.
-
0:53
And now you can see we are given this window
-
0:56
with a preview of our image on the left,
-
0:58
all of our options here in the middle.
-
1:01
So if we select our first option, colored pencil,
-
1:05
you can see that effect is then applied to our image.
-
1:10
And then on the right we have all of these variables—
-
1:16
such as pencil width, stroke pressure, paper brightness—
-
1:20
where we can adjust and see how the image looks
-
1:26
with these given variables adjusted.
-
1:31
Also at the top here you will see we have this drop-down where it says colored pencil.
-
1:35
This gives us every single option under each one of these categories.
-
1:41
As you can see, on the left next to colored pencil we have cutout,
-
1:45
and it's also right here.
-
1:47
These are all alphabetized.
-
1:49
So if you're not quite sure what effect you want to apply, this is great
-
1:54
because we are able to preview it and make sure this is exactly what we want.
-
2:00
So what I'm going to do is apply this ocean ripple effect
-
2:03
to our image by selecting okay.
-
2:06
And now you can see this effect has now been applied to our image.
-
2:10
And when we open up the appearance panel
-
2:13
you can see we have ocean ripple right here.
-
2:17
Now I have also applied some other effects to this image
-
2:22
but they're all hidden.
-
2:24
And that's what great about the appearance panels.
-
2:26
We're able to compare these different effects
-
2:29
and we're able to apply as many as we wish.
-
2:33
So with the image selected again, let's go up to effect
-
2:37
and let's select effect gallery, and now let's apply the stained glass effect to it.
-
2:50
Now what's really cool about the stained glass effect
-
2:54
is this is a great way to pull a color palette from a photo.
-
2:57
Say if I really liked the blues in this image, this easily breaks them up
-
3:02
So I'm able to eyedrop the specific blues I'd like.
-
3:07
You'd select okay, and now you can see that effect has now been applied.
-
3:13
And you can apply as many effects as you'd like.
-
3:17
You can add texture to it—select okay.
-
3:22
And if you ever want to adjust them, you simply go to the appearance panel
-
3:27
and select that effect, and then you're able to adjust it and then hit okay.
-
3:33
And those are the Photoshop effects in Adobe Illustrator.
