In this video we'll take a look at adding styles to our objects with the Stylize Effects.
Stylize Effects:
- Drop Shadow
- Feather
- Inner Glow
- Outer Glow
- Rounded Corners
- Scribble

[? bell tone ?] [Deep Dive: Applying Effects: Stylize Effects with Mat Helme]
-
0:06
This next effect helps us stylize our objects or text.
-
0:11
We're able to feather, add an inner and outer glow,
-
0:15
set rounded corners, and apply Scribble effect.
-
0:19
Let's take a look at some examples.
-
0:22
Our first style is the Drop Shadow effect which you can see in this example.
-
0:27
The drop shadow simply applies a drop shadow to the object—
-
0:30
whether it be an object or text.
-
0:32
In this case, it's text.
-
0:34
So let's apply drop shadow to the text on the left
-
0:37
and take a look at the options the Drop Shadow effect offers.
-
0:41
So lets unlock our layer, drop shadow, and select the text on the left,
-
0:46
and we'll go to effect, stylize, and select drop shadow.
-
0:51
Now from here we're able to apply different modes to the drop shadow.
-
0:57
Let's go ahead and select normal.
-
0:59
Then we have the opacity—let's bump this up to 100.
-
1:03
And this is the x-offset, so this pushes it right.
-
1:08
Let me go ahead and hit preview.
-
1:10
You can see it's pushed right 7 points.
-
1:12
So let's bring that down to 0.
-
1:15
And then the y-offset, which pushes it down in this case—
-
1:20
and if we go negative, it will go above the text.
-
1:23
And then we have blur, which is at 5 point.
-
1:27
So let's bring the y-offset down to 3—
-
1:31
and then the blur—let's bring that rate down to 0.
-
1:34
And for our color—let's select a dark gray.
-
1:40
And you can see now we have this 3D effect by using the drop shadow.
-
1:44
Pretty cool!
-
1:46
So let's select okay—and that's the Drop Shadow effect.
-
1:49
Next let's take a look at the Feather effect.
-
1:53
Now the Feather effect simply does that—
-
1:55
it feathers out the outside of the object, thus leaving it transparent.
-
2:01
And when you select the object on the left and we apply a Feather effect—
-
2:07
stylize feather—and you can see we can change the radius of the feather option.
-
2:17
So the higher it is, the more feathered the object becomes.
-
2:21
And that is the Stylized Feather effect.
-
2:25
And next we have a similar effect which is called the inner glow—
-
2:30
which does that—it applies an inner glow to the object—
-
2:34
similar to the feather but the feather, remember, makes it transparent,
-
2:37
and the inner glow simply applies a color.
-
2:41
So let's select the text on the left and let's go to add new effect, stylize, inner glow—
-
2:48
and make sure our preview is on—
-
2:50
and that looks a bit like the feather and that's because our background's white
-
2:56
and our color is white, so again, we have our mode option—let's make that normal.
-
3:02
And let's change the color to black—
-
3:05
and now it has that sunken-in look.
-
3:08
And we have the option of the opacity—if we drop that it gets a little lighter—
-
3:12
and our blur—right now it's looking pretty pixelated.
-
3:16
So if we drop the point it looks a little bit sharper—let's leave it at 4 point—
-
3:20
and by default it puts it to the edge.
-
3:23
So the inner glow right now is around the whole edge of the text.
-
3:26
But if we do center, it then applies it to the center,
-
3:29
and we can play around with the different options.
-
3:33
And that's the inner glow.
-
3:36
Next up we have outer glow, which is just the opposite.
-
3:39
It applies to the outside of the object.
-
3:42
So if we select the text on the left and say if we wanted to make this glow a dark green,
-
3:49
we can do that.
-
3:51
So we go to effect, stylize, outer glow—
-
3:54
and we want a darker green, so let's go to normal and select dark green,
-
4:01
preview on, bump the opacity up, drop down the point—
-
4:08
we'll bring it to 4—and now you see we have this dark green.
-
4:12
Next up we have round corners, and this is really cool for when we're creating—
-
4:18
say, a bunch of buttons, and we want to apply a rounded corner on each one of the buttons
-
4:25
but we don't want to use the Rounded Rectangle tool.
-
4:27
We can simply use the Rectangle tool.
-
4:29
If I select the rectangle on the left and apply the stylize rounded corners,
-
4:36
I'm able to give it a specific radius—let's bring this up to 20—select okay—
-
4:42
and now when I re-size this, it keeps that continuous effect across the whole rectangle.
-
4:48
Whereas if I was to use the Rounded Rectangle tool and then stretch the width,
-
4:55
you can see the corner radius doesn't stay the same—it actually stretches—
-
4:59
so by using the Rectangle tool and applying this effect to it,
-
5:03
we are able to re-size it without changing the corner radius—it stays consistent.
-
5:08
And finally we have the Scribble effect—which does just that.
-
5:13
It makes the object look like it's scribbled.
-
5:16
So let's select the text on the left and let's select stylize scribble—
-
5:22
and we have a bunch of options here.
-
5:24
And this is definitely one of those effects that you're going to want to play around with.
-
5:28
So right now our setting is at default, but we have these presets, where—
-
5:32
we have child-like scribble, dense, loose, sketch, tight, and a bunch more.
-
5:38
Let's select preview on—and you can see the child-like scribble is pretty intense.
-
5:44
So let's get a sharp scribble—and again—
-
5:47
this is going to be one of those effects you're going to want to play around with.
-
5:52
And those are the Stylize effects.
