[Ryan Carson - Founder, Carsonified & Think Vitamin] Hey, everybody! 0:00 I am Ryan Carson, the Founder of Carsonified and I'm here in beautiful Orlando this week, 0:03 and I'm going to talk about startups--everything I've learned, the good, the bad, 0:06 and hopefully share some tips with you that will help you start your own startup. 0:09 So let's get started. 0:12 [?music?] 0:14 How you doing? 0:17 [?music?] 0:19 [How to Build a Startup: Introduction with Ryan Carson] 0:22 [Think Vitamin Membership - Est. 2010] 0:25 Hey, everybody! I'm Ryan. 0:27 As you saw, we walked down the street and I told you more 0:28 about what we were going to do today, and this is all about startups, 0:30 so if you're a web designer or a web developer, 0:34 the whole point of this video is just to help you understand 0:37 how do you launch a company? 0:39 How do you do business stuff? How do you succeed with that? 0:41 You've got the development down, you've got design down, 0:45 you're good at that, but what about all this business stuff? 0:47 So I'm going to hopefully walk you through some of the things I did that were good, 0:50 some of the things that were bad, 0:52 what's worked for me and what hasn't, 0:54 hopefully give you some tips to help you succeed. 0:56 So the first thing I want to talk about is well, why am I talking to you? 0:58 What do I have to say that means I know what I'm talking about? 1:01 So I'll tell you a little bit about my history and how I came to start Carson Systems 1:05 and where I am today. 1:09 [?music?] 1:11 [Getting Started] 1:12 I started off in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 1:14 I was born in 1977 and I grew up there, 1:17 spent my whole life in Colorado and then went to Colorado State 1:21 and got a degree in Computer Science. 1:24 I almost studied chemistry and I quit, basically after a semester. 1:26 I just thought, "I don't know if I want to do chemistry. 1:30 "How about computer science? It sounds exciting." 1:33 I did that and graduated in 2000--that was right at the height of the dotcom bubble. 1:35 I was getting offers left, right, and center for lots of money to work for Oracle and Sun 1:39 and IBM, and I just thought, I could always do that, but I'm going to go 1:46 experience the world a bit, see what I can see, and I moved to the UK in 2001. 1:50 I studied C++ but the web was getting exciting, 1:54 and I actually discovered Flash first and everyone was sharing their Flash files 1:57 and it was a really exciting time. 2:02 I thought the web--something's happening here; this is exciting, and I ended up 2:04 being more of a PHP developer and worked at three different studios, 2:08 so I understand the studio side of things. 2:12 How do you run a web design studio successfully? 2:14 What is that about? What works? What doesn't? 2:18 And then eventually, I got just sort of fed up, I guess, 2:20 with working at a company, and I realized I needed to start a company, 2:25 so in 2004, I started Carson Systems. 2:28 So that was the beginning of my journey as a business guy, 2:31 and I've gone from knowing nothing about business 2:36 to running several successful companies that do millions of pounds of revenue 2:39 and thankfully, we've succeeded. 2:44 I'm excited to share some stuff with you, so let's get started. 2:47 [?music?] [Think Vitamin Membership - Est. 2010] [membership.thinkvitamin.com] 2:50
