In this course, you'll need a VR headset (either the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive), a Windows PC, and a graphics card that's better than or equivalent to the NVidia GTX 970.
In order to follow along with this course, you'll need the following:
- HTC Vive - This course will teach how to set up Unity with the HTC Vive. Other headsets might work with some adjustments to the project.
- Windows PC - For now, there are no major VR headsets that support macOS.
- NVidia GTX 970 (equivalent or better) - The VR headsets in this course require a desktop graphics card that's better than or equivalent to the GTX 970. Less powerful graphics cards might work, but you may experience degraded performance.
- VR in Unity - Project Files - This is a zip file that contains the Unity project for this course. Download the file, unzip it, and then in your file browser (Finder on OS X and Explorer on Windows) navigate to Assets > _Scenes. Finally, choose the scene you'd like to open.
The future is finally here.
Virtual reality, or VR, allows us to put on a head-mounted display, or
HMD, and experience other worlds, other times, and other realities.
We can take field trips to Mars or the Middle Ages, play sports or fight dragons,
walk through buildings that haven't been built, or safely practice important skills
that can be used in dangerous situations or hazardous environments.
In these lessons, we're going to create a simple basketball game,
but all of the skills you learn can be applied to other types of VR projects,
not just games for entertainment.
You'll also need a few things to follow along.
First, you'll need a headset that works with open VR.
I recommend you use the HTC Vive for
these lessons, but other open VR headsets may work as well.
And while mobile platforms like Gear VR and
Google Daydream are interesting, they won't work for these projects.
Second, you'll need a Windows PC and
I recommend that you run Windows 10 or later.
At the time of this recording,
there are no popular VR headsets that are supported on Mac OS.
That may change in the future, but for now Windows is a requirement.
Finally, I recommend you use a graphics card that is better than or
equivalent to the Nvidia GTX 970.
It's possible that older GPUs will be able to run this project in VR,
but you may experience degraded performance.
VR is an emerging technology that is still being defined.
However, in general, VR experiences can be divided into seated experiences and
In seated experiences, the player sits in a chair and uses the mouse and
keyboard, a game pad, or hand-tracked controllers for input.
In standing experiences, or room scale experiences,
the player stands up and can walk around a small area called a tracking volume.
We'll learn about room scale experiences later on and learn how to use hand
tracked controllers, but we have a lot to do before we can get there.
To keep things simple,
we're going to design our basketball game as a stationary experience first.
Players will be able to look in any direction using their head, and
then use the mouse to aim and shoot baskets.
Then, in subsequent courses,
we'll learn how to adapt the same game to be a room scale experience.
