Cofounder of Chaotic Moon, Whurley, talks about the importance of trying and embracing risk with projects. He also shows off one of their cool projects, a Kinect powered self-driving skateboard!
[MUSIC] 0:00 So without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to Whurley. 0:04 Whurley works at Chaotic Moon Labs, he doesn't just 0:09 work there, you started it, if I'm not mistaken? 0:12 Or co-founded it. He he does all sorts of amazing things. 0:14 He's, if I may, pushing the boundaries of technology. 0:20 But doing it in a manner that is not normal. 0:24 And that's in part 0:28 because he is from Austin and you know, Austin and not normal to begin with. 0:29 So without further ado I'm gonna let him take it away. 0:34 Whurley here you go. 0:37 >> Thank you very much. [SOUND] Alright, so. 0:38 [SOUND] Before I start my slides, which start with a bunch of problems 0:41 we have to solve before I can get going, I have another problem. 0:45 Which is, I do like two types of presentations. 0:49 I talk to kids, and I talk to adults. And they're very 0:51 different, cuz I curse a lot. No, this'll be perfect. 0:54 And there's actually kids and adults here, so 0:57 that's not a scenario I've been prepared for. 1:00 And last night I thought Sylvia, where's Sylvia? 1:02 I thought you were the only kid, so I've solved the whole 1:05 cursing problem because the hotel was nice enough to get me these. 1:07 So if you could just wear those for like, 20 minutes, 25 max. 1:10 >> [LAUGH]. 1:14 We will be, we'll be great. But then Chris was like, 1:16 there's other kids. So, it's like, okay. 1:19 I have to change every slide. 1:21 But I just did that, so we're good. [LAUGH] 1:23 So now, before we begin our journey to this complete disappointment. 1:27 He set expectations way too high. 1:32 There's a couple things that I have to do. 1:34 And legally I have to do them. 1:37 And the first one is to provide you with question number 1:39 one, which is, what do you tweet out during this if you 1:41 want to get me fired or don't want Chris to invite me back? 1:44 so, there's the slide that says that legally 1:47 and then there's all of the Twitter handles. 1:50 And you can include Robotsconf and he can not invite me back. 1:52 And then there's a second question which some of 1:56 you, how many of you did I meet last night? 1:58 Like five or six of you, right? 1:59 Some of you asked last night, and that's this. 2:00 >> What would you say, you do here? 2:05 >> Hoo, that's tough one. 2:09 [LAUGH] fortunately, although that's a great question, 2:10 we're not here to talk about me today. 2:13 We're here to talk about actually getting some stuff done, cuz you're 2:15 gonna be here for this amazing weekend and we often have to work 2:18 on the weekends, and so I thought stuff we did on the 2:23 weekends might fit with inspiration for stuff that you guys are gonna do. 2:25 And we're gonna fit that into a presentation that's a little movement that 2:28 started with some guys and gals in 2:31 Amsterdam called VAPORWARE to make her wear. 2:32 And, the basic concept is, is that you can no longer have powerpoints; you can 2:35 no longer have things explaining your ideas, 2:38 it's too easy to just build your idea. 2:40 So, in the time it takes you to put together 2:43 market research in a proposal for a funding source, or whatever. 2:45 You can actually just build something and show 2:48 that to them and it's much more powerful. 2:49 But to do that, you have to reduce the build times dramatically. 2:52 And to do that you have to be willing to do a few things. 2:55 So, what I'm gonna do is show you an example of three projects 2:57 that we did. Three of the more well-known projects. 3:00 And we're gonna start with the, the three principals here, and that's gonna be easy. 3:04 The first one is ITFM. 3:09 You guys should be able to figure that one out. 3:12 Even the kids can. She figured it out. 3:14 Creating possibilities, which sounds so cliche. 3:18 But we figured out a, a while back that one 3:22 of the biggest problems we had with our engineers on our 3:25 engineering team was that science is like a cage for them. 3:27 And so it's all of the things that can't be done. 3:31 So you're like, I got this great idea. 3:33 We should build this mind control whatever. 3:34 And they're just like, oh, ho, that's not how neuroscience works. 3:36 And I was just like, oh you're fired. >> [LAUGH]. 3:38 >> So we try to make it really like there's no, 3:42 it's not like some cheesy corporate, there's no bad idea thing. 3:45 It's more like, sure why not. And usually 3:48 what we do is we Google and if they're like, 3:50 no one has done it, then it's like, then that's perfect. 3:52 That's the idea we should go with. 3:54 But creating possibilities we'll get into a little further in. 3:56 The final thing is embracing risk. 3:58 And so embracing risk sounds so cheesy cuz everybody says fail fast 4:01 and do these other things, but it's so very, very necessary and true. 4:05 But I'm not talking about failure, I'm talking about risk. 4:09 And by risk, I'm talking about risk to the project, risk to your personal reputation, 4:12 et cetera, et cetera. 4:16 Cuz you would be surprised at how much credit people in our community 4:18 and especially people outside of our community will give you for just trying. 4:21 So, and to kick this off, we're going to talk about this. 4:25 I dedacted it. How many 4:28 of you read manuals? That's perfect [LAUGH]. 4:32 Those eight of you need to leave 4:36 now [LAUGH]. 4:40 I didn't think anybody was going to actually raise their hand [LAUGH]. 4:40 No, you can come back. 4:46 [SOUND] All right, get out of here. 4:47 So, the thing is, is we, so CES 4:50 2012 my business partner comes to us and labs us like a gleam in my eye 4:55 and so what we have is like an old Delta V rocket and some skateboards and 5:00 like Arduino stuff and everything you could buy from Sparkfund or whatever. 5:05 You know, it was just insane. 5:10 And what happened was they you know, my business 5:12 partners were like we want to go to CES and 5:14 we want to do something that is the biggest 5:17 thing that gets attention at CES but we don't want 5:19 to spend any money and you have to be able to fit it on a plane with you and 5:21 just take it with you and keep it in 5:23 your hotel room and you should have some backup parts. 5:24 And we were like what are we going to do? And I'm a big long boarder and 5:27 so I had at home this electric skateboard. And I had never used it. 5:30 So we had to order a new battery for it 5:37 cuz it literally had been sitting in, you know, storage forever. 5:38 And so I said you know what we could do? 5:42 We take the skateboard and do something really, really cool with it. 5:44 And our marketing guy at the time said, 5:48 yeah, we'll call it the board of awesomeness. 5:50 And everybody was like, yes! That's great! 5:54 And so, I was like, whoa, whoa, wait. 5:56 I just mentioned skate board once, why are we committed to skate board? 5:57 There's like a rocket and there's all [LAUGH] kind of other stuff, but 5:59 because of the name, then obviously that was the project we needed to do. 6:02 And so, what we did, said, is what can we do with this board to get attention? 6:06 So the first thing we did was we went to the CES website and we found out 6:11 that Microsoft had spent literally millions of millions 6:14 of millions of dollars for the Kinect at CES. 6:18 They were like, 6:20 okay, it's a skateboard with the Kinect, and 6:21 one of our engineers, who we fired, said. 6:24 Well you can't use kinect outside, it says so right here, 6:28 it says can't be used outside, can't be used with moving 6:31 background, and if you've ever used a Kinect, that's sort of 6:34 true, and we were sitting there, we were puzzled by this. 6:37 And he had read this manual and he knew everything about Kinect, and 6:40 he was like, it's not gonna work, too much ambient light, there's you know, 6:43 you can't have the background moving, if it's a mount 6:46 on the skateboard, so on, so on, and so on. 6:48 And we were like, well, I got really frustrated. 6:49 I was like has anybody ever even tried, because that's really, really important. 6:53 And so what we did was we said, I'll tell you what we're gonna do. 6:58 Let's just put it on the skateboard and see if it, 7:02 you know, take it outside and see if it does anything. 7:04 And low and behold it did. 7:06 It works in fairly different types of lights and shades. 7:07 In indirect 7:11 sunlight it doesn't work so great, but you could 7:11 do, actually you could do a lot with it. 7:13 And what we found out was, nobody had just ever tried. 7:15 Because the manual said don't do that. 7:18 It also has a thing called an end user license agreement. 7:20 [LAUGH]. 7:23 We don't really read those, either. So. 7:24 >> [LAUGH]. 7:26 >> So, what we came up with, was we came up with the idea that you could drive 7:27 a skateboard at 35 miles an hour with a 7:29 kinect, So one thing before we go to the video. 7:31 When 7:36 Windows 8 Developer Preview, whatever crazy thing we had to use to 7:37 do the kinect, there was an error at 35 miles an hour. 7:41 It goes, beep, and then the thing stops 7:44 almost instantly and you go flying off the front. 7:46 So, physics. 7:48 We all know what that is, she does but I'm not gonna say it. 7:52 I'll show you a couple little, 7:55 little videos of that. 8:01 [SOUND] 8:06 [SOUND] [SOUND] 8:11 [MUSIC] 8:17 [MUSIC] 8:27 [MUSIC] 8:42 Okay, so you guys are wondering like, why is the interface look like this? 9:10 That's because Windows 8, those exceptionaires and the developer 9:14 preview, and then it goes beep, and you Physics. 9:17 So that's why this is, this is. 9:19 The faster you go, the lower you get your center 9:22 of gravity, until, until you're like this, like oh god. 9:25 So we, we later refine it and did all kind of cool things like go fast and not 9:30 on a cool hand lotions but this was 9:35 a really great interface for that entire project. 9:38 And this got, and this got a lot of attention. 9:41 So this is deal, so it's a skateboard with a Kinect on it, right? 9:43 Big deal. 9:45 And, and, and I'm not saying it like a humble brag, I mean. 9:46 The whole point of my group, A Chaotic Moon, is to do really cool stuff, 9:49 that's like, anybody, that you look at and you go, man, I could've done that. 9:52 That's exactly the point. 9:56 So, while you're here this weekend, you should do something. 9:58 And if you do, then I have to play this video every time I show it. 10:01 Then you can get on all these international TV shows, 10:04 and watch the confusion as they say, board of awesomeness. 10:06 And we don't have it yet, but we're putting 10:10 together a clip of German, Portuguese, French and everything. 10:11 No matter what, they get to it. So, this is the Galileo show 10:14 in Germany. 10:21 >> [FOREIGN] 10:27 [FOREIGN] 10:33 [SOUND] 10:38 [FOREIGN] 10:42 Board of 10:47 awesomeness. 10:52 [FOREIGN] >> It's great. 11:02 What's funny is, what you don't know is that 11:06 the announcer, the producer told us when he would 11:08 like pause he would just like also there's a, 11:10 I don't know what that is, I'm not saying that. 11:12 So it's funny, then on live TV they skip over it 11:15 an then in the overdubs they always have someone say it. 11:17 And here's what's really funny, in Portuguese they're going along 11:20 and then it's a woman talking and then it's a man. 11:22 And he's like obviously someone they 11:25 knew like on Skype and he's like Board of Awesomeness. 11:27 >> [LAUGH]. 11:29 >> It's hilarious. 11:31 But that, but the thing is, is don't be limited by what you're told you can do. 11:34 Try to do stuff. 11:40 All these parts are so cheap today. Okay, we busted up a few kinects, right? 11:41 And took them back to GameStop and we're like, we don't know, it was on the TV. 11:46 >> [LAUGH]. >> [LAUGH] 11:49 It blew up. 11:53 And they let us return them like four or five times, god bless them. 11:55 But then they were just like, you can't blow up anymore kinects. 11:58 And we're like, we're not and the guy was like, I'm sorry. 12:04 I just, I can't do this. 12:06 But the second thing I wanna talk about is creating possibilities. 12:08 Creating possibility is so important because so many times, we think of 12:12 all the reasons we can't do something as engineers, and we never think 12:15 of the reasons that we can do it, or just. See, I almost cursed again. 12:18 Just not care. 12:23 And so, we have a rule, about rules, which is care less. 12:24 It's so amazing. 12:29 And I've just adopted that across, as you can tell, my entire life. 12:30 It's great for relationships. 12:34 Totally. You're like right sure, that sounds great. 12:38 But creating possibilities is really important, so 12:41 what happens when you do an awesome project? 12:43 At CES and why it's like it was the greatest thing at CES. 12:46 It won CES great thing of the year. 12:50 And you're like actually, and CES is like actually we don't know who chaoticmoon is. 12:53 They didn't seem to pay to be at CES. 12:57 So. 12:59 They didn't win anything. Everybody wants to know 12:59 what you're gonna do next. 13:03 And so we had a very short time to do 13:04 something next, and I thought, here's what we should do. 13:08 We should do a rocket attached to a skateboard 13:10 and like Shaun White, and he like jumps it using the Kinect at the X Games. 13:17 And our friends at the X Games were like, nope. 13:22 And we're like, what about without the rocket? 13:24 And they're like, still no. 13:27 And we're 13:27 like, what if a drone, and they do not like drones. 13:28 They're like, definitely not. 13:31 And be like [SOUND]. 13:34 And we came up with all these ideas. 13:35 And I had what I thought was a wonderful 13:37 idea that everybody hated which is I wanted to 13:38 take children who were disabled and, this is not 13:39 meant to be funny, it's true I misused the term. 13:44 I said, I said affix, but I meant it scientifically like 13:48 safe on a board, and then I want to have another board. 13:51 With a network between them. 13:54 I wanted to take like Tony Hawk, 13:56 or somebody and they could ride the skateboard. 13:57 And then whatever they did, the other 14:00 skateboard would follow them like a real speed. 14:01 And this kid who could never have ridden a 14:02 skateboard would have been able to ride a skateboard. 14:04 And no matter who I called, Make a Wish Foundation or whoever. 14:07 Nobody wanted to do that. 14:10 I was, so I'm gonna do that on my own probably this next year. 14:11 So what I ended up with was mind control. That'll work. 14:15 And one of our engineers was like, you're insane. 14:19 And we thought, what if you could control the board and set 14:23 it with the connect with your mind, because that would be easy. 14:27 And the reason it'd be is easy is why? 14:30 Good software engineers are lazy, and 14:32 great software engineers are really, really lazy. 14:34 That's where we get refactoring from. 14:37 Why would I do all of that hard work you paid me for twice? 14:39 I will just charge you for it the third and fourth time. 14:42 And so, what we did was, we said we 14:45 could use the entire system, and just add in EEG. 14:47 Simple, right? 14:52 Neuroscience. 14:53 It turns out neuroscience is a farce. They don't know anything. 14:54 Cuz we went to neuroscientists, we're like, here's what we want to do. 14:58 Take the skateboard, you think about it, takes you somewhere. 15:00 And and our marketing guy was like, ooh, ooh, I've got it. 15:03 And he decided to call it the Board of Imagination. 15:06 [LAUGH] 15:09 So at this point we were committed to doing it again, and 15:12 my third business partner, Mike, was like, what is with all the skateboards? 15:15 Because at CES, there were two companies releasing new 15:20 electronic tape boards, and we trounced them in the news. 15:23 And so they were like, we need to find 15:26 who these Chaotic Moon guys are in Austin making skateboards. 15:28 And we're like no, we just have one, it was just a PR stunt. 15:30 And they, we couldn't convince them when they called 15:33 me, I was like, no, no, there's no, we can 15:35 like, work with you guys on stuff for your skateboards. 15:36 And they're like, we're watching you. 15:38 >> [LAUGH]. 15:39 >> So, so this video is great, but I've got to say something. 15:41 So we create a possibility, you say, you know what, who cares. 15:45 We'll find a way to do it. 15:48 And then you go and you find all these renowned neuroscientists and you talk to 15:49 people like Christoff and he's like, ooh, 15:53 there's a dirty secret in neuroscience, The roundworm. 15:54 It only has three to the two neurons and 15:58 it's been mapped out for 15 years and nobody can figure it out. 16:00 So anybody that tells you all this stuff 16:03 about reading brains and stuff, it's all BS. 16:04 And we're like, well, that was convenient, that 16:07 that came from an authority on that space. 16:09 And and I spoke at a neuroscience conference a couple of months ago, and I 16:11 said that it was, it was all a farce, and this guy goes prove it. 16:16 And I go I'm keynoting your neuroscience conference. 16:20 [LAUGH] Pretty sure. 16:23 [LAUGH] Considering the only thing I've ever done was I spent 16:29 three days building a skateboard you can drive with your mind. 16:32 [LAUGH] Doesn't make me an expert. 16:36 And so what we did, the skateboard's really 16:38 cool, but a couple things, The Gadget Show flew 16:39 over from the UK to do this amazing video on him, so I want you to watch. 16:42 When you create a possibility, you capture people's imagination. 16:48 I want you to watch when he's interviewed up close. 16:51 Just watch his face because 16:52 when he walked up, he's like who got the xbox controller? 16:54 I'm like no, it's not so. 16:56 He stands there forever. 16:58 Now what I tell people is, he's, you know, 16:59 trying to figure out how to go and all that. 17:01 And, the reality is, he's waiting for one of us to magically 17:03 be like okay now he's on it, and it doesn't work that way. 17:05 We were like we can't control it, you've got to do it, we're just. 17:08 So, the other thing is, he says the 17:12 headset was designed specifically and exclusively for my head. 17:15 That's not true, we bought it 17:18 on Amazon, it's like 250 bucks. 17:19 And the, the third thing is, he jumps off of the board. 17:22 It also stops. 17:27 So, I don't know why, but he, like, right 17:29 when he gets going, he just like whoa, it's going. 17:30 And he just jumps off of it. 17:32 So with that, let's take a look at 17:34 how, what the creating a possibility can result in. 17:37 [MUSIC] 17:42 [SOUND] Polly had clearly been blown away by Metropolis two, but 17:43 back at Venice Beach, I was about the try the most exciting bit of 17:48 technology of our world tour so far, a mind controlled skateboard. 17:53 Whurley, how are you doing, man? 18:00 >> Doing great. 18:00 How are you doing? >> I'm, I'm, I'm very excited. 18:01 >> Are you ready. 18:03 >> What was that? >> For this? 18:03 >> Was that a little thing with the. 18:04 >> That was a little thing. That's a secret mind control handshake. 18:05 So are you ready to try this? >> Are you kidding me? 18:07 A mind control skateboard? Yeah, I am! 18:09 >> That's right. So lemme tell you a little bit about it. 18:11 This board has a 800 watt motor. 18:13 It's got three motorcycle batteries in it basically generating 36 volts. 18:15 It's got a Samsung tablet here in this 18:19 emotive headset, we're gonna put this on your head. 18:20 >> [LAUGH]. 18:22 >> And we're gonna try to train your brain and the board to the Kinect. 18:23 Once we do that. 18:26 Hopefully, when you think, kind of imagine where you want to go. 18:28 >> Yeah. 18:31 >> The board is gonna take you off, 18:31 in that direction. 18:33 >> Okay, so when I'm imagining where I want to go, what's happening? 18:33 >> We're picking up the electrical patterns, and 18:36 basically the neurons as they're firing in there. 18:38 And converting that into commands for the board. 18:40 So you want to do a little training? 18:42 >> Yeah. >> Let's do it. 18:44 Let me get this on you. >> Okay. 18:44 Thanks, man. >> So, getting a great signal. 18:46 >> Okay. You get a good signal. 18:49 >> Because [CROSSTALK] from your head. Actually maybe a little too much signal. 18:51 >> Me? 18:55 >> Maybe you have too much brain power for the board to handle. 18:55 It might not be able. >> I love this, I love this. 18:58 There was one real world problem though. 19:01 The headset had been designed specifically and elusively for Whurley's brain. 19:03 >> Before we start I think it's only fair to tell you 19:07 the chances of you getting this board to go anywhere are astronomical. 19:10 >> And as I began Whurley's doubts [CROSSTALK] seemed to be confirmed. 19:13 >> That's also not true. Chances were 100%. 19:15 >> Nothing. 19:18 [LAUGH]. >> Ready? 19:18 Go. [LAUGH] You got nothing. 19:24 If you get distracted, if you look at a pretty girl, if you 19:28 start thinking, oh, this is too fast, if you think, oh my god. 19:30 >> Who's that? 19:33 >> The golden retriever's notorious for distracting mind control skateboards. 19:33 It happens all the time. 19:37 But then, something happened. 19:38 [NOISE] There you go, you've almost got it. 19:41 That's it, you were doing it. 19:43 >> [NOISE] Look at that. >> Don't, don't get distracted. 19:44 [LAUGH]. >> It's broken. 19:48 That was brilliant. 19:48 >> But that was nothing compared to what I did next. 19:49 [MUSIC] 19:52 [SOUND] That's amazing! You think forward, 19:54 about launching yourself forward, and if you get it right, it starts to move. 20:01 It's, it's incredible. 20:06 It's like something out of a science 20:08 fiction movie, It's, it's comic book craziness. 20:09 Wow! 20:14 >> The top speed of this is about 32 miles an hour. 20:14 Man up, 20:18 let's put it on high. >> man. 20:19 What you like? 20:22 32 miles an hour on a brain controlled skateboard. 20:23 That's the speed limit where I live. That's, in fact, I'll get a ticket. 20:25 >> Come on, man let's do it. 20:30 >> Switch it up, baby >> Come on, we're doing it. 20:31 Let's do it, you ready? 20:32 >> Switch it up. 20:33 Initially my nerves about the impending speed were 20:34 so fired up I just couldn't concentrate my mind. 20:37 >> Confidence, you've 20:40 got this. >> But then. 20:44 >> That's it, that's it. 20:45 Come on. Come on. 20:47 Hold that thought. Don't look at me. 20:48 Hold that thought. 20:49 Hold that thought. Hold that thought. 20:50 [MUSIC] 20:51 Now you can stop. >> I'm so focused I can't stop. 20:54 Help. 20:58 >> You are the first person my friend, outside of me. 21:00 On planet Earth, to ride a mind-controlled skateboard. 21:03 Number one. 21:06 >> Man, that makes me feel really good. 21:07 Honestly. >> Next step, hoverboard. 21:10 You need to do that. 21:12 >> I'm living in the future, I've arrived. 21:13 I've been waiting for this since the 80s. 21:15 And with that, I thought my way 21:17 off into the sunset, a beautiful end to 21:19 the third day of our Californian road trip. 21:22 [MUSIC] 21:24 >> So two more things. 21:25 What he really did when he jumped off is the board weighs 120 pounds. 21:27 So he hit a Lexus. 21:31 And so we left a note on it. 21:32 And it said hit your Lexus with our 21:34 mind-controlled skateboard in the passenger side rear quarter panel. 21:37 Please e-mail for damages. And we got a e-mail that said no 21:41 harm no foul please forget my e-mail address [LAUGH]. 21:45 >> [LAUGH]. 21:49 >> And and then and then the other thing was since it's 21:50 so heavy was like I'm gonna ride it off to the sunset. 21:53 We're like that's amazing, it stopped before the sand, cuz it's really heavy. 21:56 So what he did was, like he crashed my 22:00 board into the sand and then he did like this 22:02 weird like head stand thing, and so the EEG 22:04 had like sand in it and, we're just like oh, 22:07 next time we'll think of it differently. 22:10 So always embracing risk. The last thing we wanna talk about. 22:14 Again this is not failure. 22:19 This is not failing fast. 22:21 This is just being comfortable that you're probably going to screw up. 22:22 Cuz if you're doing anything interesting, the story never goes like, hey, we're 22:26 at robots comp, we had this great idea, and then we like, built it. 22:30 And then people gave us millions of dollars and we sold them. 22:33 It was awesome. 22:35 And now we're famous. It goes more like, it was horrible and 22:36 I lost my house. And my significant other left me. 22:40 And all of a sudden, we thought we had it. 22:44 And we didn't have it that time, either. 22:45 But it's been ten years, and now things are working out pretty good. 22:48 And I don't bag groceries. 22:50 So doing the thing I started, so that's pretty good. 22:51 You don't hear narrative arcs that are like, it was just amazing. 22:55 We did it. 22:58 The truth is, it's really hard doing anything interesting. 22:59 And understanding risk, and being able to embrace it, is good. 23:01 Now notice I say embrace not mitigate, we're 23:05 not talking about pushing risk off, we're not 23:07 talking about treating risk differently, we're not talking 23:09 about adjusting ourselves or our projects to risk. 23:11 We talking about just saying hey there's risk, someone at my 23:15 company got electrocuted last week, by a taser, that's a risk. 23:18 Technically it's a taser copter. >> [LAUGH]. 23:25 >> And it works. Good news. 23:30 I like looking on the positive side of things. 23:33 And here's more positive news, they're an intern, which means they signed a waiver. 23:37 Even better. 23:41 But, what we had to do to come up 23:42 with this is, we had done these two projects when 23:44 out of nowhere, all of the sudden, Discovery Channel calls 23:48 and they're like we saw the skateboards, we want to 23:52 come out to labs and cover some stuff. 23:55 And we were like dude, we're gonna be on the Discovery Channel and then the 23:58 next sentence was, we want to talk about 24:01 anything but the skateboards cuz that's been everywhere. 24:03 And we're like, and everybody's like [SOUND], 24:06 and they're like, so, what do you got? 24:08 And I said, something amazing. 24:11 And they're like, what is it? And I was like. 24:14 Incredible. You are not going to believe this. 24:18 And they were like, tell us. 24:22 And I was like why don't you just come let me show it 24:24 to ya, it's kinda better seen than talked about cause it doesn't exist. 24:27 And that's risky. 24:32 And they said great, we'll be there on Tuesday. 24:34 It was Friday. We were like hm. 24:37 And so we hung up the call, and two people were 24:41 super excited, they were like, we're gonna be on Discovery Channel! 24:44 And the other person who was my partner 24:46 in crime was just like, you just 24:47 told Discovery Channel we have something amazing. 24:49 They're showing up with a film crew on Tuesday. 24:50 And I was like, yep, we should go have margaritas at lunch. 24:52 [LAUGH]. And so we did, and what we found 24:56 out was I, I came up with this idea, it was like, ooh, remember laziness. 25:02 There's two things you guys have to remember 25:07 this weekend, be lazy and done is good, right? 25:09 Cause if it's not done, it's the greatest idea in the world, it doesn't matter. 25:14 And if it halfway works, it could be fine. 25:18 And if somebody gets hurt. 25:22 They took a risk being on your team, that's their fault. 25:24 >> [LAUGH]. 25:27 >> You didn't, you didn't force them with a 25:27 gun to their head to join your little project. 25:29 Or maybe you did. 25:32 [LAUGH] So what we did is we said, interns go steal a shopping cart. 25:33 >> [LAUGH]. 25:38 >> And try not to get caught. >> [LAUGH]. 25:40 >> It was also an intern intelligence test, as it 25:44 ends out, because one of them got caught, the target. 25:46 The other two took a truck and went by Whole Foods and chunked a 25:50 shopping cart in the back as they're 25:52 like [NOISE] like they're robbing a bank [LAUGH]. 25:54 So we get this shopping cart, and, and I was like, see 25:58 what we do is we take the skateboard system and we just invert 26:03 it and the shopping cart follows you. huh, right? 26:06 Which means we don't have to do any work before Tuesday. 26:10 Wrong. 26:12 Because they're like the shopping cart doesn't have wheels or a motor. 26:13 And I was like, ooh, that's true. 26:16 So we got a Eddie robotics kit, and we 26:19 just literally used oh gosh, it's slipping my mind. 26:21 I forget which brand we used. 26:26 Basically there's all kind of little plastic beads 26:27 you can melt and shape, and cool with the 26:29 dryer and stuff. 26:31 And we just literally were like, it's attached now. 26:31 And then we painted it so that nobody could see. 26:34 [LAUGH] And then we, we put, kicked it out, and 26:36 the problem was Discovery Channel was like, this is amazing! 26:39 And we had surprises for them. 26:43 So you should always have it do that one more Steve Jobs thing, 26:44 and they were like, this is incredible, and we were like, yep, sure is. 26:46 And like, we should take it over to Whole Foods and film there, 26:49 cuz I mean, it's a really cool project you have going with them. 26:51 oops, Whole Foods doesn't know about the project. 26:54 And they're a customer. 26:58 So I had to go to my business partner and 26:59 be like, so, how tight are we with Whole Foods? 27:00 Because, we have one of their shopping carts we'd like to get 27:06 it Discovery Channel with them, film just a little, in and out. 27:09 20 minutes. 27:13 Filming stuff doesn't take 20 minutes. 27:16 The German people that filmed that for Galileo took eight hours. 27:18 My 17 year old son was asleep in the car when the police were knocking. 27:20 So, I had to go get him and he was just like, this is the worst day of my life. 27:23 but, what we did, is we built a shopping cart. 27:28 Now, this video is going to be funny, 27:30 because it is going to break. 27:32 Over and over and over, but that's a risk we took. 27:34 We built it in a couple of days, and we made it do some pretty neat stuff. 27:37 And so instead of editing the video, I'm just gonna show 27:42 you the whole thing as it was produced on the segment. 27:44 Only one note on this video, that lady I think she was 27:48 crushing on me, the dude that was with her, not so much. 27:51 This is called the smarter cart. >> But 27:58 first, are you on a diet right now? Or do you know someone... 28:02 >> Listen for the angst. 28:05 >> Who is on a diet? If you do, you know how hard it can be. 28:06 Well, now there's a new bit of technology to maybe help out a little bit. 28:09 >> Absolutely. 28:14 This week's inventors segment is all about the so called smarter shopping cart. 28:14 [NOISE]. 28:19 >> This is our first office. >> In this Texas 28:23 office they're making something that's never been created before. 28:28 It may make your life easier. 28:31 Help make you healthier, or maybe it's just the coolest 28:33 creation you never knew you needed, the world's smartest shopping cart. 28:37 >> Wait for it. 28:42 >> I've taken down a couple of things on your shopping list. 28:42 Should I load them for you? >> Yes. 28:45 >> I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. 28:47 >> Yes. >> I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. 28:50 >> Okay, maybe not the smartest shopping cart. 28:53 There are still some glitches to iron out. 28:56 But with barely two weeks of development, it's still a baby. 28:58 Just getting. [CROSSTALK] 29:01 >> Also, lying helps. 29:02 >> First time, and already it's extraordinary. 29:03 >> Provides a bunch of new features 29:06 that your normal shopping cart doesn't have. 29:08 For example, it can recognize you and have your dietary needs and shopping 29:09 lists and things like that transferred from 29:14 your smartphone or online on a website. 29:16 And it can also 29:18 follow you around a store, and as you put items in the basket, it can add them up. 29:19 And if you put something in the basket that goes against 29:22 your diet, it can recognize that and make an alternate suggestion. 29:24 >> It can do this almost entirely with parts that you can buy yourself. 29:28 It's got a Samsung tablet for a brain. 29:32 And the wheels are powered by motors usually 29:34 used to roll up power windows in a car. 29:36 Even the eyes of the system are something you maybe familiar with. 29:40 It's a Microsoft Kinect 29:43 camera that assigns colors based on how far away an object is. 29:44 This creates a three dimensional model of whatever is in front of it 29:49 It can also recognize humans and figure out how your skeleton is moving. 29:52 >> It's figuring out where all your joints are. 29:56 What we can do with that is actually use that to tell us there's 29:58 a person in front of us, where that person is, which direction they're heading. 30:02 >> But they're designing the cart to 30:06 do far more than simply follow shoppers around. 30:08 They want it to know your diet, keep track of your meals so you don't have to. 30:11 >> We know all that fine print, all the little ingredients that are 30:16 running kind of glances at unless you really pay attention and miss things. 30:18 So we're able to let you know hey I need gluten free, I need 30:22 sugar free, I need to only have so much sugar in so much portions. 30:25 To do that, it needs to know exactly what you're putting in your cart. 30:29 >> Tomato sauce, organic. 30:34 >> That's 30:36 what this little sensor is for. 30:36 It tracks the radio frequency identification, or 30:37 RFID, of everything you put in the cart. 30:41 It's kind of like an invisible bar code. >> The RFID reader itself. 30:44 Sends out a pulse of microwaves. 30:48 It actually activates the little chip in there, it's got an antenna. 30:51 And the antenna picks up enough of that energy to basically 30:54 boot up the computer that's on the little chip in there. 30:58 What we're using is just a very simple one that 31:00 just responds back with a serial number that says, I am this number. 31:01 >> It's not always easy to get all those different 31:05 parts to talk to each other like they're supposed to. 31:07 >> It is giving commands, it is not following me now. 31:10 I'm seeing the commands prompt. 31:13 >> Even though it's still having growing pains in the lab, they're gonna 31:15 take off the training wheels and thrust it out into the real world. 31:18 [MUSIC] 31:21 At first this two week old cart seems to be throwing a temper tantrum. 31:26 >> It's decided it wants to install the drivers again. 31:30 But after some rebooting, some fiddling, and maybe 31:33 a dash of good luck, the cart is revived. 31:35 >> Thank you. 31:39 I see you have a couple of things on your shopping list. 31:40 Should I [INAUDIBLE] for you? >> Yes. 31:43 >> Let's go shopping. 31:46 >> Spaghetti. 31:47 Note you have indicated you prefer gluten free. 31:48 This item contains gluten. 31:51 Deboles' spaghetti is a gluten-free alternative. 31:52 Would you like to get that instead? >> Yes. 31:55 >> The cart definitely has come a long way 31:58 in its short life, but it's not quite perfected yet. 32:00 >> It's very crowded in this store, so I'm not 32:03 sure how this thing is gonna maneuver through the aisles. 32:05 >> If they bring your dog to the grocery store, 32:08 your dog gets all the groceries off the shelf for you. 32:10 >> I'm a vegetarian, and that's really amazing for 32:12 me because I don't have to sit there looking 32:15 through all the, all of the lists and 32:16 finding out whether or not there's meat in it. 32:18 >> The creators hope to expand the cart's 32:20 skills so that it will have facial recognition, retrieve 32:22 your shopping list from your phone, and one 32:26 day maybe even do all your shopping for you. 32:28 [MUSIC] 32:31 >> So couple funny things on that video [COUGH]. 32:35 We were in the store and the guy goes, 32:39 so how long have you guys been working on this? 32:41 Like, what, months? 32:43 And I was like, no a couple of weeks. 32:44 And, then the engineers were like don't say 32:45 that, cause it's like, I was like, don't worry. 32:48 A couple weeks is still amazing for them. They don't know. 32:50 >> [LAUGH]. 32:52 >> Besides, we can't be like, three, four days. 32:54 [LAUGH] Cause then the producer would have been like, 32:58 you mean when we called you? [LAUGH] So, it's like, what can we say. 33:00 It's like, oh yeah, we started it a week or so before you called. 33:05 But this is but this is, this is important because what happened 33:08 was we got on this TV show, and then I was at this big event for grocery stuff. 33:14 Cuz here's the other thing, if you do anything innovative this weekend, 33:19 should put it out on YouTube and Vimeo and then all of these 33:22 non-innovative intro, industries will call and they'll be 33:25 like, you, sir, are an expert at whatever. 33:27 [LAUGH] You should come speak at our big important conference. 33:32 And you can be like, yeah pay me. We talked about that yesterday, remember. 33:35 [LAUGH] Right. So so basically 33:40 it, it, it was totally great. And what it led to was, everyone who had a 33:47 shopping cart patent for any kind of automated shopping cart, emailing me. 33:50 And me going, I don't read patents either, sorry. 33:55 And that's not to say you should 33:58 violate people's intellectual property, that's just to say, 34:00 you know, this one guy's like, we have been working in, on this for 12 years. 34:02 And I was just like, well if you've been working on it 34:06 for 12 years and we've been working on it over the weekend. 34:07 [LAUGH] Your business sucks. 34:10 [LAUGH] 34:14 So, I'm sorry. 34:15 I was like, we'll, we'll give the technology to you. 34:16 We don't really care. 34:18 We did it cuz the Discovery Channel called. 34:19 And the other thing is this guy in the audience once told me. 34:21 He said, he got up and he was just razzing me about the shopping cart. 34:23 And he was like how he would have done it differently. 34:27 And he would have done this and he wouldn't have risked 34:28 his company's reputation and made him look bad on international TV. 34:30 All of this stuff, and, and he finished, and 34:34 he goes, so do you have any questions for me? 34:36 And I go, I go, and I, I was gonna be 34:38 like, no, thank you very much for berating me in front of everyone. 34:40 And then I thought, yes, I do. 34:43 I was like, how many times have you 34:46 had an automatic magic shopping cart on Discovery Channel? 34:47 And he was like, oh, I've never been on Discovery Channel. 34:50 And I was like, exactly. 34:52 [LAUGH] But that takes risk. That takes comfort for, with risk. 34:54 And so, I'll leave by saying, and by the way, it 34:58 says zero, but I'm not over, because I started my own timer. 35:01 From whenever I decided, 35:04 30 minutes started. 35:05 Don't read the manuals. 35:09 Or, read them, and look for all the things that it 35:12 says it can't do and be like, that's my starting point. 35:14 I will start with those features it says it doesn't do, cuz that's 35:17 a great place to do, and just 35:20 create possibilities for yourselves as you're here 35:22 this week and just think about, you know, it doesn't matter, just, you, you have 35:24 Google, just, you know, be like hmm, we can build a jing-a-pling 35:29 robot with leap. That sounds like a great idea, right? 35:34 Don't, worry about like, oh well here's all the hard stuff about it. 35:37 Just do it, and try it and mess it up. 35:40 You'd be surprised at how simple things are if you just, try. 35:42 And the last thing is, don't worry about risk. 35:45 If no one got hurt here this weekend that would be a disappointment for me. 35:48 >> [LAUGH]. 35:53 >> Just on a, on a personal level. 35:53 And so the last thing I'll say is that I wanna thank all of you. 35:55 I wanna thank Chris and the organizers. 35:57 We should 35:59 give them a big round of applause because I really appreciate this opportunity. 35:59 [SOUND]. 36:03 And, and because. 36:06 [SOUND] Those of you in this community, some of you I know, 36:07 some of you I don't know but all all of you are 36:11 my inspiration because whenever somebody like discovery channel calls we think of 36:12 all of you and we think, aw we gotta do something better. 36:17 So I really appreciate all of the inspiration. 36:20 And I was going to be leaving right after this. 36:22 But apparently because of weather I now don't 36:24 have a flight, so I think it would be 36:26 unfair, although Sylvia and I plotted last night 36:31 to be a three person team with her dad. 36:34 I think, I think that might be a little unfair 36:37 so what I was gonna do is volunteer for anybody who 36:39 has a hack project and wants any kind of crazy 36:41 idea that I'm not legally responsible for if you get hurt. 36:43 I would be happy to work with any of you on any projects 36:47 you're doing. 36:50 It would be an honor, so thank you very much. 36:50 I appreciate the time.
