Determine ahead of time what you want to happen as a result of your presentation. Knowing if you are pitching a new idea, delivering a budget update, or simply sharing information will impact the design of your presentation.
-
0:00
When you are setting out to create your presentation,
-
0:03
ask yourself the following questions.
-
0:05
What type of information am I delivering?
-
0:08
What do I want to happen as a result of this presentation?
-
0:11
And how formal is the presentation?
-
0:14
Begin with, what type of information am I delivering?
-
0:18
You may be pitching a new idea, program, or policy.
-
0:21
You may be teaching coworkers a new skill.
-
0:24
You may be sharing information, such as a quarterly marketing report,
-
0:28
a budget update, or a project plan.
-
0:31
Be clear on what the presentation is about before creating content.
-
0:36
Next, what outcome do you want as a result of this presentation?
-
0:40
In other words, will there be a call to action or a recommended plan?
-
0:44
For example, if you were sharing the results of a recent customer survey,
-
0:48
your call to action may be,
-
0:50
based on this information I've shared from our customers,
-
0:53
I recommend that we start offering these new products in the next quarter.
-
0:58
What if your presentation is meant to inform rather than persuade?
-
1:02
When asking yourself what you want to happen as a result of the presentation,
-
1:06
the answer could be that you want your audience to walk away with all
-
1:10
the information they need, or that they have learned what they need to know.
-
1:14
Finally, think about whether this presentation is meant to entertain,
-
1:18
inspire and deliver big news.
-
1:21
Or is it a smaller presentation, designed to inform or
-
1:25
persuade a few co-workers or leaders.
-
1:27
Most work presentations will be the latter.
-
1:30
They will be detail focused, likely have some kind of data to report and
-
1:35
they may wind up proving an idea with facts.
-
1:38
I'll be focusing more on how to prepare for those smaller types of presentations.
