Music ?] [Treehouse] 0:00 [Overview of Web Design with Nick Pettit] [teamtreehouse.com] 0:04 The breadth of skills required of a web designer are growing all the time, 0:09 so it's important to start off with a solid foundation 0:13 that can be applied to any task that's thrown our way. 0:16 If you're completely new to web design, don't worry. 0:20 We're going to start from the very beginning by creating 0:23 our first HTML web page. 0:25 As we move through HTML, we'll learn about all the elements and semantics 0:28 that you'll need to know. 0:31 After learning about HTML, we'll cover CSS or cascading style sheets. 0:33 HTML and CSS go together like bread and butter. 0:38 HTML is the code that describes the content of your page, 0:41 like text and images. 0:44 CSS is the code that describes what your content should look like, 0:46 such as colors, fonts, and more. 0:50 After we're through HTML and CSS, 0:53 we'll cover some technology foundations to help you 0:55 upload your web pages to a server on the internet. 0:58 That way, other people will be able to access your web sites. 1:01 Now, HTML, CSS and technology foundations 1:05 will cover some of the very basics you'll need to get your first website 1:08 up and running live on the Web. 1:11 After we've covered those technical subjects, 1:14 we'll move on to aesthetic foundations and learn about things like 1:16 the use of line, shape, color theory and more. 1:19 These elements and principles of art will prepare you 1:23 for more complex design challenges in the future. 1:25 After learning some basic design, 1:29 we'll combine our newfound technical and aesthetic knowledge 1:31 and learn about upcoming versions of HTML and CSS 1:34 called HTML5 and CSS3. 1:38 These technologies do not replace older versions of HTML and CSS. 1:41 Rather, they build upon the preexisting skills that we'll learn. 1:45 Finally, we'll move on to some more advanced topics like responsive web design, 1:49 which will help you make your web site work on multiple devices. 1:53 And then we'll get a brief introduction to programming. 1:57 Now, you might be wondering, if we're designers, 2:00 why are we learning about programming? 2:02 Isn't that the job of a web developer? 2:04 Well, it's important for web designers and web developers to work together. 2:06 When people focus on what they're good at, 2:11 the web site or project becomes greater than the sum of its parts. 2:13 To make this happen, though, us designers 2:16 need to be capable of working well with developers. 2:19 Understanding some basic programming will help us communicate 2:22 with developers more effectively and create even more awesome websites. 2:25 Now, that may sound like a lot of stuff right now, 2:30 but once we're past it, you'll be eager 2:32 to learn about more advanced topics. 2:34 After these foundational subjects, 2:36 it's up to you to figure out what kind of designer you want to become 2:38 and what advanced skills you would like to pursue. 2:42 As a freelancer or in an organization or company, 2:45 you might be assigned many different tasks 2:49 or you may end up focusing in 1 area. 2:51 Some of the roles and tasks that designers can take on 2:54 include designing mockups, creating great user experiences 2:57 in intuitive user interfaces, working on logos and company branding and more. 3:00 Now, if none of what I said made any sense to you, 3:06 and you've never created a web page before, don't sweat it. 3:09 We're going to start out gently from the very beginning 3:13 and then ramp up, so let's get started. 3:16 [?
