[?mellow guitar music?] 0:00 Think Vitamin Membership - Est. 2010 membership.thinkvitamin.com 0:03 Accessibility: Websites - Screen Readers with Nick Pettit 0:07 Now that you know some techniques to improve accessibility, 0:13 we're going to apply them to a real project. 0:16 First, however, we should become a little bit more familiar with screen readers. 0:19 If you plan to make a website accessible, 0:24 it's important to know what the experience is like for people with impairments. 0:26 It's easy to simulate colorblindness, 0:31 and it's not too difficult to understand how many individuals 0:34 with various other impairments use the web. 0:37 However, most people don't really know what it's like 0:39 to use a screen reader. 0:43 It's important to evaluate the accessibility of web content 0:45 using a screen reader, but they can be difficult or confusing 0:48 for casual users that just want to test out some content. 0:52 Rather than avoid it, let's spend some time using a screen reader 0:56 so that we can gain a better undertstanding 1:00 of how people that use screen readers experience web content. 1:02 This is the website for a screen reader called NVDA, 1:07 which is an acronym that stands for "Nonvisual Desktop Access." 1:12 It's free in open-source, so if you visit nvda-project.org, 1:18 you can go ahead and download it for yourself. 1:24 The software is Windows-only, 1:27 so if you're on a Mac like I am, you'll have to find a way to run Windows, 1:30 either in a virtual machine or otherwise. 1:34 I should also mention that the software is still in alpha form, 1:36 so it may not always work as you'd expect it to, 1:41 and some of its capabilities are still basic. 1:44 When using NVDA, there are a few things that you'll want to keep in mind. 1:47 For one, make sure that your NumLock is off. 1:52 This can cause issues with some keyboard shortcuts. 1:55 2. Most browser shortcut keys will work just as you'd expect them to, 1:58 and 3.
