But for using gravatars we need to sign up with them... which is not very famous...

It's not a perfect solution, but it's very easy to use and is what we use here in the Treehouse Forum. You could change the app to require users to submit a profile photo when they sign up for a new account, or try to use photos from Twitter or Facebook, possible.
