Treehouse Independent Studies Program: Now Accepting Second Round Submissions!

Hi Everyone!

Are you trying to get a job, but having issues because you don't have a portfolio? Is there a project you're dying to work on, but don't have anyone to discuss it with?

We're really happy to announce the second round of the Treehouse Independent Studies Program (ISP).

As a paying Treehouse Gold member you'll have the opportunity to apply for the second round of ISPs by filling out this form and submitting your idea. Before applying, make sure you've completed either the Become A Web Developer or Become A Web Designer Learning Adventure to ensure that you can hit the ground running. If your project is selected, you'll be paired with one of our expert teachers and given one month to make your project a reality.

We will review submissions on a first come first serve basis..submission cutoff is Feb 10th at midnight PST. Only one submission per member please. Do not worry if you do not make it into this second batch, we plan to continue with more rounds of ISPs in the future. We will email you to confirm receipt of your submission (please be patient, it may take a few days), and notify you asap thereafter if you make it into the second round. Our goal is that no ideas are going to be outright rejected. They will either be held in queue for the next batch of ISPs or we'll suggest some changes to make them more feasible and then put them in queue.

We're really excited to see what ideas you come up with, and can't wait to get started!

If you have any questions that require personalized feedback, please feel free to email me directly at "watson [at] teamtreehouse [dot] com"

Thanks!

I've recently gone through the Web Designer track (waiting for Allison's last badge), so this intrigues me quite a bit. Is this program only for people who have a clear idea of a project in their mind? Or are there projects/ideas that one could be assigned to tackle? Do you guys ever pair up coders with designers as a team?

@Sam ...you should have a clear idea to submit for this round of ISPs. We're planning to introduce collaborative projects for our students to work on later this year sometime. I'd be quite happy to jump on Skype and brainstorm some ideas with you if that'd help!

When do submissions close?

@Michael - I looked at the ISP submission form ... you seriously want to know everyone's age, that's a little unusual.

In fact I can't ever recall having seen a school/job/internship application which asked that question.

@Rhys submissions are on a rolling basis and will close on Feb 10 at midnight PST. Added that in above. Thanks!

@James Yes...asking for age to get some demographic info on the users who are interested in the program. Didn't actually intend for that to be a required answer so thanks for flagging and will go back and change that now. For the record, all my post-secondary applications asked for my birthday :)

@Michael - I stand corrected, apparently I had to fill out my date of birth on my college applications.

In any event, I think collecting demographic information on a voluntary basis is actually a good idea.

On quite a many applications there is a disclaimer stating demographic information such as age, location, gender & race is all voluntary and has no affect on the application but is used for tracking demographics.

So that's my 2 cents on form design.

@James...point taken and perhaps we should add a disclaimer. To be clear though, everyone is accepted into the ISP program so long as they meet the requirements of being a Gold member and have completed the LAs specified above :)

Ooh this seems really cool, will have to check it out some more this weekend when I am not swamped. Did you guys do this before and is there something to refer to for an idea of the overview of the program?

@James thanks for sharing that link

@Stephanie, this is just the second batch of ISPs so the program is still evolving. I hope the link James shared answered some of your questions, but please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any others....very happy to answer them for you.

@Sam, not yet..we don't require members to make their projects public but are working on a cool way to allow them to do so should they want to. Indeed, there were some pretty cool projects in the first round!
