Royalty-free licenses don't require an ongoing payment for use of the work you're licensing, and are often used for licensing photographs, songs, and other media.
[Chris Zabriskie] Some paid license agreements, require an ongoing royalty payment 0:00 or licensing fee. 0:04 So Nintendo may not be manufacturing all those backpacks, 0:06 but I can guarantee they're making a few bucks every time somebody buys one. 0:10 That's a royalty payment, this continual payment based on sales or usage 0:15 of the thing being licensed. 0:19 But there are also royalty-free licenses 0:21 ones that don't require those continued payments. 0:25 Many stock photography websites, for example, 0:28 issue royalty-free licenses. 0:31 You pay for a photograph once, 0:33 and then you can use it on your website without having to pay them everytime someone sees it. 0:36 Getty images is one of the largest stock photography services, 0:40 and they also specialize in video and music. 0:44 Much of their catelogue is available royalty-free. 0:46 So remember that's not free, they will charge you for the license. 0:49 But you won't have to come back and relisence it year after year. 0:53 Other stock photo sites, like Stock Exchange, or even Mocrosoft's own stock photo database, 0:57 have many images available for free. 1:03 You don't have to pay to use them. 1:06 But each image still comes with it's own license. 1:07 It'll be royalty free, but there may still be some restrictions on how you can use it. 1:11 Some royalty-free licenses require the project that you're using it for, 1:16 to be non-commercial in nature. 1:21 They don't want you to be making any money off of it. 1:23 Others require the photographer to be credited. 1:26 It's still your job to abide by the terms in these licenses 1:29 even if you don't read them. 1:32 All of this applies to tons of other royalty-free products too, 1:34 not just photos. 1:38 Remember, read the license agreement— 1:40 always, even if it's free. 1:42 Read the agreement and understand exactly what you're agreeing to. 1:44
