Sign up[treehouse presents] 0:00 [How to Load and Use Brushes and Patterns in Adobe Photoshop with Allison Grayce] 0:02 Hi, I’m Allison Grayce. 0:05 In this Treehouse quick tip, 0:07 we're going to learn how to load and use brushes and patterns in Adobe Photoshop. 0:09 I am looking to use some brushes in my design to add texture and grunge. 0:13 There are tons of brushes and patterns on the Internet that you can find, 0:17 but I’m going to use my favorite brushes by Liam McKay, 0:20 function subtle grunge brushes. 0:22 I am going to go ahead and download them form Designmoo, 0:25 which I will link to in the description box. 0:28 Go ahead and extract the zip folder, 0:30 and inside should be an ABR file. 0:33 Copy that file, 0:36 go ahead and navigate to applications, 0:39 Adobe Photoshop CS6—in my situation. 0:41 Click on presets, brushes, 0:45 and go ahead and paste the ABR file into this directory. 0:48 The brushes already in here are Adobe’s default brushes. 0:52 So you can go ahead and close the finder here 0:56 and minimize your browser and head back on over to Photoshop. 0:58 Select the brush tool from your toolbar by pressing B on your keyboard, 1:04 or just clicking on it in your toolbar. 1:08 Navigate to the options bar and click the drop down arrow. 1:10 Go ahead and click the gear button here, 1:13 or in your case, depending on which version of Photoshop you’re using, 1:16 this might be an arrow, and click replace brushes. 1:19 We’re going to navigate to the directory where we paste our ABR file, 1:23 and we're looking for function subtle grunge. 1:32 So go ahead and click open. 1:35 Your new brushes will now appear in the scrolling area 1:37 in the drop down menu of the options bar, 1:40 and go ahead and select one of the brushes. 1:43 I am going to add a mask to the shape that I want to apply the texture to. 1:45 To preview the brush, press the caps lock button on your keyboard. 1:51 So I am going to head on over to the layers panel 1:55 and add a mask to the object that I want to add texture to. 1:58 In this case, I am going to add texture to the grey circle. 2:01 So go ahead and press the add layer mask button right here, 2:04 and making sure you have black as your foreground color, 2:07 go ahead and click on the canvas to apply the texture. 2:11 And you can just click around to add more texture. 2:15 Press control Z to undo the texture. 2:18 It’s really just a matter of experimentation. 2:21 So I think that looks pretty good. 2:24 Now I want to add a texture in the background, 2:26 and I want this texture to be a repeating pattern. 2:29 So my favorite tile wall patterns are from Tileables, 2:33 and I am going to navigate to their website 2:36 and download a repeating paper background. 2:38 So you can either download the entire pack here, 2:40 or you can just click on one, 2:43 open image in the new tab. 2:45 I am going to copy this image, 2:48 bring it back into Photoshop, 2:51 create a new document, and paste the image. 2:53 Now that I have the tileable image, 2:56 it’s time to define it as a pattern. 2:58 You do so by going to the menu bar at the top and pressing edit, 3:00 define pattern, and feel free to name this pattern as you wish. 3:05 So I am going to make this document a little bit larger. 3:12 You can delete the solid color background, 3:17 create a new layer, 3:19 making sure that layer is underneath the circle. 3:21 So go ahead and choose the paint bucket tool from your toolbar 3:25 and navigate on up to the options bar. 3:27 Click the drop-down menu next to the thumbnail here, 3:30 and you will see your new pattern. 3:33 So go ahead and select that, 3:35 and you can click on the canvas, 3:37 and we're done. 3:39 By using brushes and patterns we’ve pushed this design to the next level. 3:41 Now that you know how to load and use brushed and patterns in Photoshop, 3:44 the endless looks you can achieve with these tools 3:48 are only limited to your imagination. 3:50 Using these tools will create a tactile and artistic feel, 3:52 setting your design apart from the rest. 3:55
