Selecting, Moving, and Resizing Layers

Layers, as we previously touched upon, are
the building blocks for

all designs created in a Sketch.

So it is important that we understand a
little bit about them.

We need to select the layer in our
document.

And there are two ways you can do this, by
clicking on

the layer's name in the list or by
clicking on the layer in the canvas.

To help us show what we are about to
select on the canvas,

a light blue outline will appear around
the layer when we hover over it.

When you're sure you want to select the
layer just click it.

To deselect a layer press the escape key
or click on a blank area of the canvas.

But right now, we a layer to be selected.

When a layer is select you'll see these
eight white squares appear

around the layer.

These are called handles.

If you click and drag on any of them,
you'll change the size of the shape.

You may have noticed the values in the
inspector have changed.

The top two fields have to do with the
layer's position on the canvas.

And the two underneath have to do with the
size of the layer.

You can type in here to edit them.

So let's just round the size to a multiple

confirm the size.

Moving a layer around is incredibly easy.

All you have to do is click on a layer and
drag it around.

Just click anywhere on the layer.

But remember, if you touch a handle,
you'll adjust its size.

A shortcut for incrementally moving or
nudging a layer's position.

It's done by pressing one of the arrow
keys and

this will move things by one pixel.

If you hold Shift + Arrow key, you'll be
able to enlarge a layer by ten pixels.

As well as moving and resizing, what else
can you do with a layer?

For one, you can duplicate a layer.

Right-click on the layer in the canvas or
list, and select Duplicate from the menu.

But look at the layer list and we will see
a third item, Rectangle 2.

This is sitting on top of the first
rectangle layer.
