Twig uses filters to format the content on a page.
Twig Documentation
Twig for Template Designers describes the syntax and semantics of the template engine and will be most useful as reference to those creating Twig templates.
Variables can be modified by filters. Filters are separated from the variable by a pipe symbol (|) and may have optional arguments in parentheses. Multiple filters can be chained. The output of one filter is applied to the next.
