When we refer to the usability of a website or app, we're talking about how easy it is to use. By the end of this series, you should have a clear understanding of how usability factors into the design of any website or app.
People like to use things that are easy 0:00 to understand, that work as expected, and deliver value. 0:02 Over thousands of years, from the invention of 0:07 the wheel, to the sites and apps that you 0:09 have on your phone today, people have been 0:12 trying to figure out ways to provide useful things. 0:14 Usability on the web is not all that different from usability in real life. 0:19 And in this series we'll discuss how you 0:23 can produce usable site and apps of your own. 0:25 Now for example, I've been told that this device 0:29 will play our opening video, oh, man it's heavy. 0:32 Alright now if I was a play video, button where would I be? 0:36 I don't know, there's a lot of, there's a lot of hardware back here. 0:42 Lots of language I don't understand. 0:46 Wires that, [SOUND] I mean, kinda looks dangerous. 0:49 I don't even wanne touch it. 0:51 [SOUND] I mean, wouldn't it be simpler if you just had a button, say on an app? 0:52 That played the video for you. 0:57 [SOUND]. 0:59 [MUSIC]. 1:01 [SOUND]. 1:02 When we refer to the usability of a website or 1:04 app, we're talking about how easy it is to use. 1:08 Now this includes the various parts of the interface. 1:12 Such as the buttons and links. 1:14 As well as the organization of the content. 1:16 And bringing it all together with menus 1:18 and navigation that are clear and effective. 1:20 In the end, the usability of whatever you're building has a direct 1:23 correlation to the user's ability to get things done, and to be satisfied. 1:27 The goals of this course are to define usability. 1:34 And in addition explain how it compares and 1:37 works along with user experience and user interface. 1:39 We're also gonna pinpoint some common usability concerns for websites and 1:43 apps, explain how new usability concerns have arisen on mobile devices. 1:47 And we're gonna highlight some ways that you can improve the 1:54 usability of your own designs through 1:55 tools, frameworks, testing and other techniques. 1:59 By the end of this series, you should have a clear understanding 2:04 of how usability factors into the design of a website or app. 2:06 And designing a usable experience for people means more 2:11 than just getting them to click on a button. 2:14 It's about providing positive interaction, building 2:17 trust and allowing users to be successful. 2:20
