Python Python Basics (2015) Number Game App Squared

I need help with the squared challenge

I'm just so confused with this challenge can anyone please help. I don't know what to do, it's really confusing and here's the code i have written so far. how can i convert things?

def squared(num):
    if num == int():
        return num ** 2
    elif num == str():
        return num ** 2
# EXAMPLES
# squared(5) would return 25
# squared("2") would return 4
# squared("tim") would return "timtimtim"

the challenge asks you to use try and except . what you want to do is : 1- try if the argument is a number then (num ** 2) 2- if not a number return the argument multiplied by its length

def squared(num): try: return int(num) **2 except ValueError: # like else return num * len(num) # just the lutiplication
