A better option for your local server is EasyPHP

I strongly recommend to use http://www.easyphp.org/ instead of XAMP as a local server for PC env. Thank you.

Or USBwebserver. No installation required.. Just copy the files and go.

The only thing you have to do is set an smpt-server if you wan't mail-support. Beyond that, it works perfect out of the box (for PC)

That's the point! Depends on your needs you choose what's more suitable. USBwebserver is nice as well, but...

Well you're missing those http://www.easyphp.org/modules.php ;)

I personally prefer Wampp to Xampp. It is more complex to set up but has better security out of the box, and I really like the virtual servers instead of separate folders for each site.
