-a does not work in terminal on mac

I tried to use -a but terminal returns fatal: Paths with -a does not make sense. How do you commit all changes via mac?

Have you done 'git add' first?

What I use for git is usually something along the lines of:

git add .
git commit -m 'your commit message'
git push origin master
