General Discussion

A success story.

Hello dear treehouse community.

My name is Kristiyan and I am a treehouse student for quite a while. Almoust everything I know I learned here. I wasn't really looking for a job as I planned to do that after my first year at university but my plans changed and I had to skip one year. So i desided that I will find a job that will give me practical knowladge. So I made myself a CV and a Portfolio and I sent it to three places I liked. I was offered a position from all of them.

So I write now after 2 months in a position of PHP and node.js developer at one of the top 20 hosting companies in the world.

The point I am going for is that this website gave me knowladge that was sufficient enough to get me a great job that I am happy with without almoust any previous experience.

I really would like to hear such stories from other treehouse students as I am sure there are more.

Hii Kristiyan, I am new to node.js no idea about server side application development, could you please give me some tips?

Hello Anuj,

What I found from my experience is that it is quite easier to start with node.js if you know a pure backend language such as PhP and Ruby. Also every time I use node.js I use it with some sort of php api because in the real world you are going to work on projects that are already in development for a couple ot years so you have to link diferent technologies together.

That's very encouraging, Kristian. Congratulations! Could you share with us more about more details about your learning experience here? LIke what are the most valuable skills that got you the job, and besides taking the course, what other things will be helpful to adapt working in the real world.

Thank you.

Thank you miss Guan.

The most important skills that got me the job were the ones that usually get overlooked by most developers. Skills like Search engine optimization and database request optimization. Knowledge of those things proves not only that you can develop web applications but that you can make them be productive and fast.

What surprised me when I started was the ammount of studying I do during my work hours. I knew that developers always learn new things but I never imagined that almost half of my work hours are going to be dedicated to learning new web technologies.

That's very good to know, Kristian. I am curious, what's your job title? Which direction are you going?

Sorry for the late reply. My job title is Junior Web Developer. So my next goal is becoming senior, which actually means different things in different companies.

Thank you.

Hi Kristian! Congratz!

I started treehouse like a two months ago. Two weeks after I started with coding, I'd sent my CV to a start-up and now I'm the Intern!

Now I'm at this start-up for a month and it's going great. Learning a lot and I am even helping my mentor with his side projects so that I can built a portfolio.

I am loving it!

It's great to see many people getting jobs because of Treehouse. Thanks Team Treehouse!

Wow, that is impressive. Thank you for the post. I am planning to focus on JavaScript as well. Good luck to every treehouse members.

You can never go wrong with focusing on JavaScript. No matter if you are Back end or Front end developer you will always have to use JavaScript for one thing or an other.
