Accessing iPhone's side (hard) buttons.

I am just starting a side project and I would like to be able to access the use of the physical buttons on the iPhone as part of my app. However, I can't seem to find any information on whether this is possible or how to do it. Could anyone help me with this?

You mean the volume buttons? How to use those buttons to trigger an action in your program?

Yes, those as well as the home button and the top button if possible. And even a combination (e.g. the volume up and top button simultaneously).
