Adding 'event' to a functions parameter?

Hello,

I do not understand why 'event' is used in the functions parameter. What does it do and why?

$("#hm-gallery a").click(function(event){  <---- event
 event.preventDefault();
 var getLink = $(this).attr("href");
 console.log(getLink);
});

Thanks :)

The handler is called with an event object as the parameter. This object makes several pieces of information about the event available to the handler.

It also makes several methods available, including preventDefault, which is being used by your handler.
