ajax

I need the use of ajax explained in further detail. I am looking at api.query.com, and there are instances of ajax used as a method, like ajaxSuccess, but there is nothing about when you find it by itself, such as $.ajax(url, settings);. When should it be used by itself? I understand when it is being passed information, such as $('#ajax").load('sidebar.html');, but am lost about when else to use it.
