Alarm Clock App

I'm trying to make an alarm clock app for iPhone. It will sort of replicate the default alarm clock in phone (doing this just for practice). What is the right approach in terms of setting off the alarm in such a way that it resembles iPhone's alarm clock (i.e. alarm even if app is closed, show alarm model no matter what state of condition the phone is in, etc etc)?
