JavaScript React Components (2018) Stateful Components and Lifecycle Methods Prevent Memory Leaks with componentWillUnmount()

Am I understanding this correctly?

From what I'm understanding the componentWillUnmount method will only clear the timer from memory when the component is removed from the DOM? So if the timer stays in the page, the memory will still be used? Will the component unmount when the user navigates to a different page where the timer is not showing but still in the previous page? Just trying to wrap my head fully around this.
