Anchors are not showing up with shapes?

I'm using the Photoshop CC 2015 version, and when I try to get the anchors of the shapes to pop up so I can manipulate them how I want, nothing happens. I have the direct selection tool selected and I click on the line of the path, but still nothing happens. Any help?

Click and hold over the 'Direct selection tool' there are actually two options and anchors only appear if you are using direct selection not the path selection. The arrow cursor will be white instead of black.

Choose View > Show > Target Path.

That still didn't work. I can see all of the dots for the paths around my shapes, but when I go to click on the little squares within the path of the object, I don't get the lines (what I think are called anchors) to allow me to change the shape/amount of curve/length of that specific line in the path of the shape. I hope that makes sense?

Maybe try double clicking it?
