Animations in apps

This has always been a wonder to me, when mobile applications have animations of a character walking I have always been curious as to how they've achieved it?

Does anyone have any useful tutorials?

From what you described they use some sort of gif animation that plays on the screen but for general animations i would check out the link here http://developer.android.com/training/animation/index.html Hope fully this gives you a starting place.
