Animations question...

So this lessons, i felt, kind of jumped into animations as–opposed to transitions– without proper explanation. I'm just wondering if I missed an important tutorial on animations/keyframes.

Lastly, when do animations start? When a page loads? Are they activated at certain times? I'm just a little confused...

You can control when animations start.

You can have them start when page loading is complete, or after a delay, or when some page event occurs (such as hovering the mouse over an element).

But starting on load would be the default.
