Any resource for patterns / algorithms for general usage ?

Hi i am looking for a book / articles about language independent algorithms and patterns. For example : what's the best (way ? practice ?etc) to search for a string in multiple files and put that result into a different file etc.

I know these can be googled and found on sites like stack overflow but still...
