Are image sprites still common practice today?

I heard through the digital grapevine that there are now better methods of improving image load time than using sprites. Is this true? If so, what is/are the new method(s)?

Sprite-maps are still used, they're just used differently than before with SVGs for better optimization. There's a great course here that explains it. Front End Optimization. Specifically the section about optimizing assets.

Thanks Jacob!
