As Team Treehouse is gamified, what are the most important elements of gamification to engage e-learning users?

I wanted to start a discussion as I am interested in the gamification of learning management systems/e-learning courses. I know this is a pretty general question as everyone learns/games differently.

It keeps me motivated and prevents me from getting stuck. Sometimes I won't be super excited to learn about a specific topic, but I'll think about how I'll at least earn some points along the way.

They're not so much important as a kind of bonus - like a cherry on top. I feel like a lot of us are conditioned to enjoy seeing a number go up. When you're young it's with video games, then I suppose it becomes the number in your bank account when you're older. :p
