background image not showing up

i wanted to add a pattern to my header but am unable to add it here is the code:

    margin: 0 auto;
    margin-top: 250px;
    height: 850px;
    background-image: url('C:\Users\Japneet\Desktop\pattern.png');
}

Your URL is incomplete. Try this:

    background-image: url('file:///C|/Users/Japneet/Desktop/pattern.png');

Also be aware that local file url's only work in an editor, they will not work with a web server.
