I was wondering what other languages and to what extent should someone be versed in prior to learning wordpress!

I would have said that you should certainly have a good understanding of html, css and a decent grasp on PHP (this does not need to be extensive but it will certainly help you out).
It all depends on what you want to use Wordpress for of course.
