Beginner: What software to create cartoons (animations)

Hi Treehouse.

I'm curious to know the requirements for making simple cartoons like South Park.

I'm skilled in sound, but not in animation and my question is:

What software is ideal for a beginner?

I'd like to create the characters and houses, trees etc., in Adobe Illustrator, but I broke up with Adobe Flash/Action script after many hours of trouble shooting and no production.

I understand the timeline concept in animation from audio editing, but for some reason I cannot get Flash to do what I want.

Smith Micro has an offer for Anime Studio Debut 9, but the screen shots remind me of Flash.

What can you experts recommend me?

Best regards, Thomas.

Depending on how you plan to implement your project, you can experiment with Adobe Edge Animate. http://html.adobe.com/edge/animate/

Thanks, I'm looking into it, but I was also told to use After Effects for animations in cartoons. Thanks for your reply though and happy new year :)
