best practice and workflow for styling a framework

Hi Guys, currently I'm working on a project, where I do a Wordpress Theme with the Foundation Framework.

I used Foundation for a fast prototype of the layout I wanted to have.

My Question is: Whats the best practice when costumizing and styling a Framework like foundation? How and when do you use photoshop? Actually I'm not really into photoshop, so it would be kind of cool to do the styling with css.

Also what is your workflow? do you just dive in and style one element after the other? How do you get your ideas out of your head into the browser?

In the Framework basics course Guil has a photoshop design he is just building in CSS, but I dont really understand how this is been made.
