Building a portfolio

I feel as if i am ready to work with clients but don't know where too start.

I'm currently living in the UK and looking for projects to work on with clients does anyone know any sites that are useful to use when building a portfolio i wouldn't mind working for free as getting paid for any work would conflict with support that i am currently getting.

Also since i currently have no experience as silly as this may be i am building a cv and a site to showcase my skills but since i'm no expert i'm using 'comfortable' when describing my skills can this be damaging or would you suggest otherwise.

I'm looking forward to your replies

elance, odesk, and other related freelancing sites.

Offer to make free websites for friends or small businesses that you know. If you want to be a web designer, you are definitely going to need a portfolio, so get going and good luck! :)
