Building a portfolio/blog?

I plan to build a portfolio website (web development) where I can post all of the things I have made, but I also want to be able to blog on it. What is the best way to do this? Would it make sense to get a WordPress theme and use that, even though my portfolio is advertising my website building abilities? Any suggestions for WordPress themes if so?

Also, if anyone had any suggestions of where to host a website that would be awesome. I am thinking HostGator at the moment.

Thanks all!

This is the best course for that, I think.

I agree, Jekyll is kickass for what it is, and would be perfect for a portfolio/blog. You could host it for free on github pages.

That is what I do here.

That is a perfect example! Thank you Ted Sumner and Kevin Korte!

My page is based on the course I linked above with only minor style changes.

I will definitely go through that course and make my portfolio. It looks sharp. By the way, how far along are you towards your transition from Lawyer to Front-End Dev?

I am not lawyer anymore. I need to finish my major work sample and resume, then get applying. I am working early mornings, which messes with my time. But I have to pay the bills for now.

My main project is a site for my son's Cub Scout pack. It is currently here. I need to tweak the slider and am working on a major database portion. The database is much more than I anticipated at first, but will be a great work sample when even partially completed.
