building a shopping cart

Who handles building shopping carts for websites, I'm assuming its a combination of front and backend right? My plan is to freelance developing websites for a while and I was planning to eventually learn node.js and have that be a focus in the future, once I can get employed as a developer. My question is should I learn node.js sooner or is something like wordpress decent enough for accomplishing tasks like shopping cart creation and does it allow for the creation of fully functioning websites, without back end knowledge?
