Not even sure what program is being used, and how to even get started. Do I use text edit? Or do I have to download a program? I'm pretty lost....and feeling kinda embarrassed.

I have a Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5.

TextEdit lacks some of the handy features that other text editors have for writing code such as syntax highlighting.

I'd recommend you download either Text Wrangler or Sublime Text for coding on a Mac.
