Building my own API

I am making an iOS app and I need to build my own backend (database, api, etc). What do I need to do that?? I've been learning mySQL and PHP, but I'm willing to learn something else if necessary.
I specially want to know how to build an API...

I think there is a course on tree house on How to build an API using ROR. You might wanna check that out..
