CALayer property

I want to create a CALayer property inside my ViewController class, but when I type like:

var shadowButton =  factsButton.layer

it gives me an error: 'ViewController.Type' does not have a member named 'factsButton', and I have to use the computed property here:

var shadowButton: CALayer {
        return factsButton.layer
}

Why do I have to use computed property here?
