General Discussion

Can anybody recommend a Track/Course for me based on what I need?

Just to give a bit of background - the company I work for is paying for my training to develop my HTML/CSS skills. Currently I design the graphics for all of the web pages on our website in Adobe Illustrator and rely on one of our developers to convert this into HTML/CSS and add it to our WordPress website.

The idea is that by undertaking the course, it will remove this reliance. I have a little knowledge on HTML and CSS but no knowledge of or experience using PHP or JavaScript. The main goal is to be able to develop the custom theme already on our website, adding new page templates and editing existing ones.

I noticed there was a course called "WordPress Theme Development" but it is mentioned in one of the videos that you need a good knowledge of HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript so I'm a little bit stuck on what course/track is right for me.

If you there is any advice any one is willing to give me around this it would be appreciated.

I would urge you to follow 3 tracks.

  • Learn WordPress - which will allow you to learn the aspects of WordPress that don't require knowledge of coding.
  • PHP - which will teach you about the main language that drives WordPress
  • WordPress Development - which covers many aspects of WordPress Development which includes Theme Development, customising the Admin area, the Template Hierarchy and Plugin development.

This is the route I took.

Thanks for getting back so quickly!

I will definitely take a look at these, in particular the PHP and WordPress Development tracks.

I am already comfortable in using WordPress, it's more the knowledge in the development side where I'm found lacking.

Then I think you'll find the Developnent track right up your street. I've enjoyed Zac's courses in particular on Theme and menu deveolopment.

Yeah, I did a bit of it but then I was worried I didn't have enough knowledge of PHP and bits of HTML & CSS to be able to continue with it.

I think I'll see how I get on with the WordPress Development track and then drop into a PHP course if needs be.

If that's the route you want to go you may find the PHP for WordPress course interesting and you may decide you want to look more at PHP if you're still struggling with it. :)

If you're very new to Web Design in general i would urge you to do the Web Design track first as this will give you all the grounding you need on HTML and CSS.

Thanks Jonathan, I'll take a look at the Web Design track I think as I think it will suit me best as I am quite new to web design and whilst there are bits in there that I will likely already know, it can't hurt to have a refresh!

I'll also definitely take a look at the PHP for WordPress course as I think that will be the one where I find my knowledge lacking the most!
