Can somebody help me to get the AMPERSAND understanding right?

I have to add the <a> in the .footer div should be purple.

You have an extra "a" in the selector, remember that ampersand is representing "p a".

Also, you need to place the new selector and property setting inside the block where "a" is defined:

  a {
    color: red;
    .footer & {
        color: purple;
    }
  }
