can someone please elaborate on why we need to add "this" inside the ArrayAdapter parameter.

I'm referring to the line below: ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1, daysOfTheWeek);

how does "this" refer to the daysoftheweek string array?

It doesn't. "this" refers to the DailyForecastActivity. The first parameter of the ArrayAdapter constructor is a Context. We pass in the Activity, because an Activity IS a Context (i.e. Activity extends from Context).

Hope that helps!
